Jason Penn Posted April 16, 2019 Posted April 16, 2019 im pretty sure i caught way more fish when all i took was 2 rods. i threw a spinnerbait on 1, and a shallow-medium diving crankbait on the other. those were both 6'6 bps rods and the 1st gen rick clunn reels. i couldn't afford the quantum reels at the time.
bassguytom Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 I use whatever this guy tells me to because he always catches fish! I’d use a stick some thread and a safety pin if he told me to! 3
Jaderose Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 I was fishing at a local park a few years ago and this guy comes walking up and asks me if I could spare some line and a hook. I had some fluoro leader and, of course, plenty of hooks. I handed him the box of line and he peeled off 6 or 7 ft and took the hook and tied it on the line. He had a carton of night crawlers with him. He baited his hook and THREW it in the water. I asked him what he was doing and he acted like he didn't hear me. He didn't. He was deaf. I went over and cut him off a stick and gave that to him. He smiled and tied the line on the stick and started tossing it out...and catching fish. Turns out he had got into a fight with his wife and rather than continue the fight he went out walking and on a whim, bought some worms. He didn't own fishing gear. He said all his money went to his family. When I left he was pulling out bluegill as fast as he could put the line the water and was having a ball. I guarantee that neither I nor most of you have EVER enjoyed your multi hundred dollar set-ups as much as that young fella was enjoying using that stick with some line and a hook. BTW.....he could read lips and his speech was pretty normal. It was only when you knew that his speech issue became apparent 2
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 17, 2019 Super User Posted April 17, 2019 My grandpa (who was the best fisherman I have personally known) would bash me for spending so much to catch fish. LOL 2

LOL Yes. When my older brother brought home an ABU5000 reel, my grandpa said " Well, it better clean em and cook em for you too!"

Once when I was a kid, my family plus aunts, uncles and cousins had a couple of houseboats on Lake Shasta. I don't think any of us really fished, but my cousin saw some fishing line in a tree. He climbed it from the houseboat and grabbed the line, turned out there were two hooks as well. We each grabbed a short stick, wound the line around it and caught some trout off the boat. They tasted awesome! That's something that has stuck in my mind for probably 40 years. Probably one of my most memorable fishing experiences. I don't care what people think. I have a BPS Brawler combo, got it on sale for $25. I also have a pink Pflueger Lady President I got brand new for $21 - there's a thread about it somewhere. I have a rod AND reel that I made from PVC pipe and fittings. Just as a goofy experiment. I've casted it but haven't tried it on real water yet, but it's about time to do so

Ugly Stiks were all I used up until about a decade ago, and some of the most proficient fisherman I know use nothing but them. They're great rods for the money and will always have a place on my rack. 1

That's exactly why. I was just stating that Quantum buying Zebco was incorrect. Imagine Zebco trying to sell a Van Staal with their name. Still, Van Staal is part of Zebco Brands. 2
Super User Mobasser Posted April 17, 2019 Author Super User Posted April 17, 2019 Zebco and Quantum both make good stuff. They catch fish for thousands of folks. What's not to like?
Super User J Francho Posted April 17, 2019 Super User Posted April 17, 2019 I have a 40 year old 33 that works like a charm. I replaced a brass bush with a bearing, so it's a one ball bearing reel, lol. I did get a Daiwa Goldcast, as an upgrade for my queen. 4

Zebco has been very successful, but I think they knew they would have an uphill battle going into that market with the Zebco name. I’m okay with bashing brands. I’m not okay with bashing people based on their preferred brands. If I have a bad experience with a brand, I’m not going to keep it a secret. I don't think keeping it a secret benefits anyone. Well stated. No need to be an elitist jerk because you don't like someone's brand of choice. 1

Smelter96 Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 One of my first and favorite rods, a Cabelas Prodigy rod, cost me something like $60 when I bought it. In my rod box, I have combos that cost north of $1000, but that old cabelas rod with a second gen Abu Promax ALWAYS gets in the boat. It's so dang smooth and the action is perfect for so many things. There is ZERO sense in bashing people for what they use. An older gent who fishes off a bucket on shore never ceases to amaze me at the amount of bluegills and BASS he catches with a 12ft cane pole he made when he was a kid idk how many years ago. It's the FISHERMAN, not the tackle he uses. And that's how it always will be. 1

fissure_man Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 It think it's important to distinguish between bashing other fishermen (as in the OP example) and being critical of products that one feels aren’t up to snuff. Cracking down on bullying is one thing, but let’s not expand it too far. Shouldn’t there be a place on these forums for conflicting opinions and critical product reviews? If someone isn’t fond of a product that you happen to like, own, and use, that’s not a personal attack on you. Defend it if you want, or don’t. Who cares? Yes, the old guy with the cane pole catches his share of fish, and yes, the ugly stik has its merits. Fishing with either doesn’t make someone a lesser person, a bad fisherman, or worthy of ridicule. But on a fishing forum, are negative product reviews really out of place? Would you trust a film review site that ranked everything 10/10? IMO the ugly stik is an awful choice for a bass rod and there are better alternatives in the same price range. You might disagree and that’s fine – you can share your stance too. If I came to a bass fishing forum contemplating the purchase of an ugly stik, these are exactly the types of opinions I’d be looking to see. 2
Super User J Francho Posted April 18, 2019 Super User Posted April 18, 2019 I don't mind negative reviews, but a great deal of them are based on misuse of a product. "I bought this, and it was terrible at that." Well, it wasn't designed for that. Vanish gets beat up pretty bad here, yet it remains one Berkley's best selling lines. Why? It's very good walleye and panfish jigging line. I have a friend that fishes for BIG smallies on Erie, and has no issues drop shotting with 8# Vanish. I've seen it in person, him landing a 6+ after my PB 5-12. But, I bet you take that line and start skipping senkos under docks and in some cover, and there will be trouble. I think the important part to read into is what the reviewer was doing with the product, and why their experience was positive or negative. 5
Uknowme Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 I personally have high end gear. Most set ups are pushing or even past the $800 mark. I am fully aware it does not help me catch more fish than a sub $100 set up. I buy them because I like it. No other reason. I am not a snob to whatever any person uses. Does not matter what you use. In fact most people hack on me for how much I spend. 5
Super User J Francho Posted April 18, 2019 Super User Posted April 18, 2019 Just now, Uknowme said: In fact most people hack on me for how much I spend. I definitely relate, and most of my rigs are a couple hundred to $500 less. Isn't that funny, spend too little, not good enough. Spend too much, elitist. None of tat could be further from the truth for the person using the gear. It's qwhy people defend their choices so fiercely. 1
Subaqua Adinterim Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 I Use 17# Vanish for leader when fishing for Salmon. Never a problem. There are some that jump on the negative bandwagon just to be followers. Use what you have good experience with and don't use what doesn't work for you; just that easy.
Uknowme Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 I in fact look at my most recent set up and think do I really need that? It is a Megabass Addermine and a Shimano Exsence. Don’t get me wrong the thing is wicked but.......again it does not help me catch anymore fish than a much cheaper set up. Elitist or not good enough who cares. If I ran into the issue the original poster did it would be difficult not to make a comment in some sort of fashion. Do the fish know what I am using or even care?
Super User J Francho Posted April 18, 2019 Super User Posted April 18, 2019 I won a 60% off coupon for a Dobyns rod in a tournament. I picked up a 744c and 745c in the Champion Extreme line. Man, they are nice to fish. I wouldn't have spent retail for them. I have tasted the forbidden fruit, lol. 1

I sold a Dobyns to a co-worker and now he has gone off the deep end in what he buys. He now has Loomis, St. Croix and Kistler rods. It becomes a sickness really. You think the bait monkey is bad, wait until the bait gorilla is on your shoulder. Hard to ignore the weight of the gorilla on your shoulder.
