I won a 60% off coupon for a Dobyns rod in a tournament.  I picked up a 744c and 745c in the Champion Extreme line.  Man, they are nice to fish.  I wouldn't have spent retail for them.  I have tasted the forbidden fruit, lol.

So... Which Extreme are you buying next?!

Be careful. ?

I've had them for around 5 years.  I have a few other nice sticks, SC LTB, Pinnacle DHC7, but most of my others are from the Avid line.  I'm more likely to drop coin on a reel.

I have more rods than I will ever need.

We'd all be sick if we knew just how much markup there is in all aspects of the fishing industry.  Rods/Reels/Line/Lures/Boats....etc.

I've heard it's one of the worst industries when it comes to markups.  It makes sense when you really look at this stuff objectively though.  How much ACTUAL difference is there between a $100 reel or rod vs. a $700 rod or reel? From a materials and manufacturing perspective, there's very little cost difference.  They're smart though. They'll make the $700 rod or reel "feel" much better just by using a few upgraded parts and processes that barely cost them anything but do make a noticeable difference in performance.

The real magic is in the promotion and marketing.  Technical sounding buzzwords ("rigidity" seems to be one of the current hype words) and names that involve numbers and letters. Men love this stuff. Think cars. Porsche 911 Turbo S, Audi R8 etc... Rods/reels GLX 894c, 100sv, 50E, 200K XG etc...

We'd be sicker if all this great tackle wasn't profitable for the makers, and it went away.

There is a lot of markup but at the same time  I don't get the feeling that it's a very profitable industry.  In reality,  it's almost impossible to make a rod that's noticeably better than other rods on the market.  The only way to differentiate your product from the competition is through marketing which is probably where most of the cost of a rod goes.  Same is probably true for Reels/Line/Lures...etc

Occasionally,  I search the web for wholesale Chinese manufactures just to see how much it cost to buy a generic tackle wholesale.  Last time I did this for rods,  I found a manufacture where you could buy rods from $15 to $55 each with a minimum order of 50 rods.  The $55 rods were high modulus graphite with fuji components and premium cork just like you would expect in a high end rod.  I'm sure if you ordered several thousand you could get them for even less.

Brand bashing like the OP described is just a sign of insecurity and LACK OF CONFIDENCE of the people doing the bashing.

I have a 40 year old 33 that works like a charm.  I replaced a brass bush with a bearing, so it's a one ball bearing reel, lol.  I did get a Daiwa Goldcast, as an upgrade for my queen.

Zebco personalized this 33 for Mr. Thompson, who worked as a manager for a sporting goods department in a hardware store, in 1964. He never used the reel and today it sits in one of my curio cabinets, as I will never use it. I landed my first bass, 2 1/2 lbs, using a Zebco 202 combo in the mid 60s. In the language of the "Googan" generation; Zebco is bomb!

I saw the post you're talking about. At the time, I had never owned anything Shimano but I never heard of users complaining about their Shimano reels falling apart -- even the entry level models. When I saw it was his first or second post, I figured it was probably an fanboy/agent of a competing brand or being a troll.

Now, isn't that going against the point of this thread? I haven't tried any Googan baits yet, but I hear they work pretty well.

Well at least they're trying to promote what works for them instead of saying "what you all use is junk!"

Why not both? I own a Fender and a Gibson and the voices in my head are constantly at war with each other...

I stopped in at a tackle shop Saturday afternoon. I looked around, but didn't buy much. As I was leaving, I passed by some young guys who were teasing and laughing at another kid. I overheard them, and they were teasing this kid because he bought a new Qauntum casting reel. I turned and walked away. I've developed a no tolerance policy towards folks that bash other fisherman for their tackle choices. I've known some very good fisherman who used older tackle, and not always the latest or best and caught plenty of bass. I seriously doubt that guys who poke fun or bash others have even fished with some of the items they complain about. These days, there are so many nice rods/ reels out there it's hard to go wrong with any brand. An old buddy who is gone now, said it well. We had entered a club tournament together, and Frank showed up with 2 rods/reels. He took second place that day, fishing a spinnerbait, and a plastic worm. One young guy approached him afterward, and questioned how he could do this well , with only two rods. He said: Son, this ain't no tackle show! This is a fishin tournament. Use what works best for you!  I hope that guy learned something there. I know I did. Every major tackle company makes some very good quality gear these days, so it makes no sense to bash any one brand. The mid grade tackle that's available now is way better than top end stuff from 10yrs ago. I'll never judge any fisherman for what they fish with. It's simply wrong! Do you like a 6cyl or a V8? Well, I like a V8. But I would never be critical of those that like 6cyl. If you think on it, bass fishing is really an individual sport. You can learn much from other experienced fisherman, books, videos, etc, but after all is said and done, your the one who makes the cast, hooks the fish, and lands the fish. No one does that for you. It's an unproductive waste of time bashing others for what tackle they use. Use what works best for you. I'll have no part of it. Just my own zero tolerance policy.I hope others agree.

I hope the OP is not simply insisting on the politically correct here. If those young guys were strangers to the kid buying the Quantum or bullying him that's one thing, but bashing each other over gear choices is a much honored tradition among normal men. It's what we do for camaraderie.

Some of the best times I ever have is going at it with my two grown sons over their fishing gear choices. And if the poster who says that he would have to intervene if he saw that kind of stuff would try to do so when we are doing that....let's just say it would not be his best day.

I guess I'm saying that true bullying is not to be done, but I have a hard time imagining that making fun of a kid in a tackle shop would be any kind of true bullying. LOL...pretty nerdy bullies I'd say.

I would suggest that you guys who are getting so fired up over this never go to a construction site or machine shop. If bashing a fishing pole upsets you so this much, you'd no doubt be absolutely agog over what those guys bash each other over.

Leave my 13 rods, Berkley Vanish, Kastking Superpower, and YUM Dingers alone, too.  I be catching fish on them things.

My Aird-X rods, Diawa and Pflueger reels, Yo-Zuri and Power Pro line all work just fine for me, and didn't need the outlay of much moola.

Depends on what and how they were saying.

"Why'd you buy that cheap reel?" is minimal bashing and possible acceptable.

"You're a moron for picking up that piece of crap." crosses the line far as I'm concerned.

"Possibly acceptable"? ..."crosses the line"?

Maybe if we are talking about a public online discussion I'd agree, but if this is about a private conversation overheard in a store; don't you think that judgement is more appropriately made by the person or persons who are involved in the conversation?

This is the whole point I'm trying to make here. It is no business of yours or anyone else's what my sons and I for example say to each other, and you have no right to pass judgement on the manner in which we relate. ...period. The same goes for any other people engaged in a consensual conversation regardless of whether you, I or the others like it or not. It just isn't any of our business.

The find the idea of people using choices in fishing gear as a vehicle for actual bullying to be ridiculous.
