Ok I got my setups ready I just need to put line on them. I’m going to be using braided mainline with a mono leader. What size braided line don’t cut into its self? Also what is the strongest knot to tie braided mainline to a mono leader to go through a low profile reel?

Are you talking casting, spinning? Both?

I use 10-15 on spinning, but you can go lighter.

My casting outfit has 20# Power Pro with zero issues though

I am aware of potential problems with dig in.

30lb 832 braid and 12lb fc leader no problem with dig in. I'm also using shallow spools not sure if that changes things for you.

40 lb braid, 14 lb leader with an Alberto knot.

This is either right on or very close for where I fish. I might say 50 lb. braid, I might not, depending on the reel. The critical part of the Crazy Alberto knot is trimming the tag end on the mono. Some people think they can't trim into the skirt of the knot, that the knot will let go if they do. That's wrong. Tighten the knot to a moderate degree, then trim the mono as close as a chicken's toenails, then pull the knot tighter again.

Properly done, that knot is a thing of beauty.     jj

Minimum 30lb for me.  I use a double uni knot because it's easy to tie.  Your knot should not go as far down as your reel, if that's what you are asking

30-50 lb Power Pro and 12-20 lb mono leader.  The FG knot is the best braid to leader knot period IMO.  The strongest, and the thinnest.  My leaders are generally about 10 feet in length and have no problems passing through my guides or reel.

The one exception is that blasted T Wing on one of my Diawa reels.  It never hangs, but ticks pretty bad on occasion.

I like the FG, but only on floro leaders with higher poundages.  6 and 8 lbs leader I use the alberto.

I would also go floro leader over mono, but thats just my preference.

FINS Windtamer is round braid made for baitcasting reels, 40 lb would be a good dia compatible with 12 to 15 lb leaders. The Royal Polaris (RP) knot is popular out west.

No reason to have a leader enter the baitcasting reel level wind or micro guides using braid with leaders.

I just tied my 40lb braid to my 12lb mono leader for my frog setup with a FG knot. It is holding tight thank y’all

For frog fishing, I would suggest going straight braid.  Not sure why you would want a leader for this.

Just my opinion

Kylek is right. That 12lb leader will be the weak link in your setup.  No need for a leader at all for frog fishing.

I use 10 foot or so leader on my bottom contact rods because they all have yellow braid and I'm paranoid that it will deter bass if there is a bright yellow line/knot in proximity to my lure.

I know a lot of people would say a bass doesn't care, but for now I have convinced myself that it matters.

I haven't seen any I'll effects from using this leader length.  If the knot can pass through my line guides, the level wind is no problem (with the exception of the one Diawa reel I own with a T wing)

Why does everyone run super heavy braid with like a 12lb fluoro leader? To save money? I typically run a 12lb with a 8-10lb leader.

12 lb braid is very small diameter .007/.008 equal to 4 lb mono and tends to cut into itself on bait casting reels. Spinning reels are designed with more line overlap on the spooled line preventing small diameter line cutting into itself.

It's not a strength issue.

Why would it be weak?

I use 16lb sunline on a few of my baitcasters without any problems.

I never have had a any dig in issues.

As for leader knots, the FG knot is the best I have used.

Because of the line test.

40# main line and a 12# leader, the leader, being lighter test, is your weak link and will break before the 40# will.

My baitcasters have about half a spool of big game mono backing, then 20 pound power pro to an alberto/albright knot to 12 pound mono. I've seen the knot I tie called both names, but bottom line is when you're out wading its a piece of cake to tie with your rod tucked in your wading belt. Plus it's super strong. I do 8 wraps both ways on the knot and every time I get hung up my line breaks at the palomar knot at the hook. Hope this helps!
