7’ Frog rod <=$150

I just bought a Shimano SLX for 99CAD. Its a 7'2" h/f and I mostly fish from a kayak

I just got a 7'1" HF Omen Black on clearance at TW for under 100 during the classic sale, specifically for 'yak-froggin.  I had heard mixed things about the quality of these rods, but I have had one in the MLxf spinning model for a couple years and it's been great, so I figured it was worth the gamble on the closeout price.

 

The main reason I had my eye on it, though, is that the handle is fairly short for a 7+ footer, which to me makes a huge difference in the Kayak for any kind of twitching/popping/walking work. The omen seems like it will be up to the task, although I won't get to try it out on the water for a while yet, so we'll see.

Hammer 7’ hvy is slightly over 150 but might be my favorite frog rod.  I sold mine and wish I had it back but I’m using a 6’10” Falcon Bucoo pitchin stick now and have been very happy.

I don't have anything special for my frog rod and i fish out of a kayak.  Rod length hasn't been an issue for me.  I currently use a Abu Garcia Veritas HF which i think is 7'2" or 7'4".  The longer rod is nice to get the leverage on them to get their head up and pull them out of the pads and vegetation.

I am on the hunt for an even shorter frog rod for my kayak, like something in the 6’-6’6” range. 13Fishing sells a 6’5” one but I cant find much info on it and it might not be as powerful as I want.  I also really want to go shorter too, both for ease of walking while seated and to get max leverage.

@IgotWood: Here’s one ya don’t hear about every day.  Go to manleyrods.com and check out the lineup. I’ve been using one for yak fishing for almost three years and really enjoy the adjustable handle. To be honest, I’m not qualified to judge its sensitivity compared to many other rods but it seems to be comparable to my Okuma TCS and St. Croix Bass Yak rods.  Might be a little heavier due to the hardware but being able to adjust the handle length so that rod butt is not whacking my PFD more than makes up for it.  Oh, and when I whacked the tip and dinged the guide, I emailed them and had a new tip within the week. Did I mention, “No charge,” for the tip or postage? In my opinion their customer service rates right up there with Lew’s and Okuma.

Wow, lots of great recommendations! I appreciate it. I feel like I should be looking for an x-fast tip. Would you agree? The stiff broomstick rods tend to jack the frog around rather than walk it. Or maybe it’s just me lol. What do you think?

What gives more leverage is standing on the deck of a bass boat. The difference between a 7' and 7'5" frog rod at 30 yards isn't measurable regarding angles on a bent rod. 

Select a rod you are comfortable using they way you fish. Knowone knows how a rod feels to you except you. If you are in a kayak and a bass eats the frog then dives down into the mat you ain't going to move that bass with any rod, you will pull the kayak over to the bass.

Should Receive it Tuesday so I cant tell. I won't be able to fish it before a month or so. Still 3ft of snow in my backyard.

I think it's silly to not fish a frog just because you're restricted to sitting down.

I use a Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 7'6" MHF rod for frogging from my kayak.  The extra length doesn't really bother me much.  I'll fish it sitting down or standing up, it's not a big deal.

I would recommend a Dobyns Fury or a Shimano SLX. They are both pretty inexpensive and great rods.

Exactly. I've used a 6'9" medium 1st gen Veritas for several years with great success. Adding a Lake Fork trailer hook to the frog helps as well

I agree. I just won't walk it in those situations, but if I have some sort of a boat, I'm usually taking it to areas where I don't need to walk it as well.

I don't think you really need an extra fast tip. A fast should do (although that is subjective by manufacturer). An extra fast tip may be a bit of a broomstick, with with a heavy backbone you should have enough power to pull frogs out of whatever weeds you're fishing.

 

Up until this year, I used a MH/F rod with 40lb braid. I don't have too many areas with weeds that were too heavy for me, and in the few cases when I found some weeds that were really heavy I just fished around the edges (and caught tons of fish).
