I just picked up a shallow spool for my Piscifun Carbon X's. The deep spools which came with the reels I have backed with old braid or mono and topped off with about 120 yards of braid. The shallow spool's braid capacity is 15# braid 130 yards. It seems like the shallow spool will eliminate the need for backing. Any thoughts on going with a shallow spool?...........

My only thought is tape the line after you tie it to the spool so it won't slide around on you when you fill it.

Even if it's a "braid ready" spool?

Quite popular in Japan as I understand and have read.

And since it is braid-ready, you are good to go to simply

tie it off with an arbor knot.

My 1000 size Stradics are not shallow, but not deep either,

and I've got braid on the entire way.

I always use backing even on braid ready spools just out of habit. Why do you want to get rid of the backing? No right or wrong just curious.

Would be curious as to your impressions of this reel compared to others you've used.

As soon as I can get out on the water, I'll report back as to my impressions. After I received the Carbon X, I was so impressed with it that I ordered another one. The proof will be in the pudding and I'll post as soon as I can...

I only use the shallow spool version of the Tatula LT 3000. It has plenty of line capacity for bass fishing, and will save you money when buys line. I put about 20-23' of mono as a backing and fill the rest with braided line. It's an excellent reel.
