bassheel Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 What conditions give you the green light to start throwing a frog/toad? 1 Quote
Dens228 Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 Considering I've caught a couple big bass in less than 3 feet of water this year with water temps in the mid 40's I guess I'll start giving it a shot when there are enough surface weeds. Quote
bh91 Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 So all year but winter and late fall and really early spring Quote

NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 If water is above 60° I usually give em a chance at eating a frog. But I don't make em eat it. Meaning no bites in 20mins it's going in the rod box Quote
CroakHunter Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 Full moon in may is when ill start throwing around a smaller hollow body frog Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted April 12, 2019 Super User Posted April 12, 2019 I don't usually throw a frog until the first of the spawners come off their spawning funk. This is not to say I couldn't catch them earlier, I just don't see a good reason to throw it before that, and I like throwing poppers more than frogs, so I'm usually doing that until the mats, pads and other junk gets going good, usually late May-mid June here. I'm sure I could catch late pre spawners with a frog if I really wanted to, I just don't. I usually catch a couple of good ones on buzz baits in March and April while pickerel fishing, but the topwater ROI just isn't there that early for me. Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted April 12, 2019 Super User Posted April 12, 2019 I've already caught a couple on the frog. When they're on the bed, a frog can be just the ticket, especially in or around the lilies. I have a dedicated combo for the frog so I always start too early so I know I won't waste productive froggin' time. Quote
d-camarena Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 I missed 2 fish on the frog yesterday. I guess the frog bite has started 1 Quote
crypt Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 where I be,all year long.............................. Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 To me, fishing with a frog is fun, but I generally only do it when there is so much slop that I can't throw a regular popper or Sammy/Spook style topwater. I'm sure some guys are a whiz at it, but I miss way too many fish with a frog to justify fishing it when I can use other baits that hook up much better. I would say that here in Iowa, mid May is probably the earliest that I'd feel confident throwing one, and that is still a month earlier than any emergent weed growth here. Quote
HeyCoach Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 I fish Guntersville a few times, it’s already time up there. Quote

IgotWood Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 When the water hits 60. The algae is forming along the banks and the weeds are beginning to mat up. Here is a frog eater from yesterday. 3 Quote

Harold Scoggins Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 This reminds me, I need to check the frog box. Quote
IgotWood Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 I need to learn how to fish hollow body frogs. I’m a one trick pony. I mainly only use a Top Toad. But there are days when they prefer a walking frog, and I just sit back and watch everyone slay. Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 Apparently, your a beast on a top water toad ? @IgotWood Quote
Hower08 Posted April 15, 2019 Posted April 15, 2019 If theirs bait shallow throw a frog. Just because it's called a frog does not meant that is the only thing it imitates. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted April 15, 2019 Super User Posted April 15, 2019 I’m sort of new to frogging, but here I’m still waiting for grass and pads. Going to fish frogs harder this season then last. Quote
Manly Studson Posted April 16, 2019 Posted April 16, 2019 In southern Indiana, the frogs croak when the air temperature is >55 degrees. They’ve been croaking a lot lately. The DNR won’t let you go frog gigging from April 30 to June 15. This must be their mating season. So now seems like a good time to throw a frog. I did catch bass on top water a couple days ago, but it wasn’t a frog. Quote
