P Line issues

Fluoroclear is crap.  A buddy of mine uses(d) it and broke off at least once on casts with it every trip we went on and I always told him to stop using it.

 

I use CX Premium and CXX and have never had a problem of breaking off at all.  I find those two are super strong and really easy to use.

P line was the first fluorocarbon line I tried. Broke off 7 fish with 3 different knots on the hook sets. Didn't use fluorocarbon for years. Tried Seaguar and have had zero problems.

For the most part , in my experiences the trilene knot only works well on trilene lines. Even then I won't use it for heavy duty applications.. Palomar knot everything else.

Try the P-line Tactical. It’s a lot stronger than Fluoroclear

I suspect the quality control during the manufacture of Fluoroclear must be really bad, and the people that say they’ve never had a problem with it have just been lucky. I’ll never buy another spool of it.

 

I went through several spools of it using it as leader material, never having obvious problems until one spool that was really bad. I couldn’t even tighten a knot without it breaking on most parts of the spool, other parts of the spool were fine. It made me wonder about all the sporadic breaks I’d had over the years.

I was in denial for a long time and can only use Fluoroclear with a loose drag and ignoring the # lb. test rating and remembering to go by the line diameter instead -  Fluoroclear breaks very close to the stated line rating . Flouroclear #15 lb. strength is about equivalent to other brands #10 lb. or #12 lb. (even that may be generous) .

Thank you all for your feedback. Won't be using it anymore. I did order P Line Tactical to try. Hopefully it's good and Cabela's had them 50% off. Seems bizzare the flouroclear isn't trustworthy. I had higher hopes for Japanese manufacturing. 

 

On a side note the SD Jam knot mentioned earlier is awesome. Spent a few hours watching knot videos learning new things. My knot choices weren't the best, and I was stuck in old habits.

I went the cheap route last year with the p line floroclear and its garbage. Use a good mono or floro. A clinch knot should have at least 6 turns not 2.

Flouroclear is made in Japan. That's what really surprised me.

Always used 6 to 7 turns. Much stronger knot options out there to utilize.

I used floroclear for a few years without issue. Then it happened... 15lb line breaking on every hookset. Switched to a older spool and the problem went away. Went out and bought another new spool and the break offs returned. 2 bad spools in a 3 year stretch (6 spools total) was too much, I stay away from the stuff now.

Floroclear has given me nothing but problems. Broke off quite a few times. Switched to a San deigo jam knot and it still didn't help. Ended up switching to Yo-Zuri Hybrid and haven't looked back.

I started using KK copolymer line. Price is reasonable(off Ebay then Amazaon) and seems to work good.

I use 8lb Flouroclear as leader material on my medium spinning setup. Tie an 8 turn uni-knot and I have had no problems with break offs unless it was clearly due to abrasion. 

Keep in mind it is a budget line. I wouldn’t say it’s garbage, but it’s cheap to buy for a reason. 

Flouroclear is NOT a true fluorocarbon line, it does not have the strength of a true flouro line. 

That said, I don’t use it as main line. I did try it in 15lb on medium heavy baitcast setup and it was too stretchy for my liking, plus it tended to have memory issues, and it was not as abrasion resistant as I would like. I fish a lot of brush and wood cover, and Seaguar AbrazX has done very well for me for several years now. 

I tried Pline tactical in two different sizes last year and had problems with abrasion on both of them. 

 

I do use Pline Xbraid  Teflon Coated in 10, 15, 40, 50, and 65lb sizes and love it! I literally can’t break the 65. The only downside I’ve found is it’s so slick I have to tie it through the holes in the spool or else it will slip around the spool.

Thanks for that info.  I had bad experience with Fluoroclear as well.  I think, like Vanish, it's actually designed for walleye fishing, not bass.  We subject our line to much more abuse.  Both lines are two of the biggest selling lines for over a decade, so they can't be "crap" as many state in this thread.  I think they're just the wrong tools.

While out fishing with my buddy this weekend, I got onto a jig bite and he quickly switched to a jig. On the first bite he got, he broke off on the hook set. I asked him what line he was using and he replied "brand new 20 pound Fluoroclear". I was then a believer of all the guys who claim Fluoroclear issues. I was using 15lb P Line Tactical that day and I had zero issues over the 9 fish I caught on a hard hook setting jig bite.

I bought a spool of Fluoroclear, 15lbs for my son. At first, it's great, no issues with knot strength (uni knot) but after only a couple weeks, the memory in the line was so bad that it was looking like it was a spinning reel with line twist. He wasn't fishing anything on it that would cause line twist either. I switched to 15lb Yo Zuri hybrid and had no issues. In fact, I think I put that line on in mid July last year and it lasted the rest of the season with some occasional KVD without a problem.

 

At the start of this season, I threw some of what we had left on for early season fishing when it could still get below freezing so I figured better that than good line. We had the same problems. I never saw line on a casting reel behave that way.

You will find a long stream of posts on this site bemoaning lost lures and fish when using fluoroclear.  I have experienced the random breakoffs others have written about.  Watched my brother cast three lures in a row off with this line.  It is just not dependable.  Line is one of the places in fishing where you truly get what you pay for.

Took advantage of the buy one get one deal on the Tactical. I was pretty nervous trying it out. It is amazing. Cast super smooth, very low memory. I brought up a 4 pound largemouth and the big branch it was stuck in today. Impressive line.
