CrankFate Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Trying to decide whether to get an MGXtreme2? Or another Aldebaran? The problem is, I've never actually seen an MGXtreme in person. Does anyone who's held or fished both know if the mgx is as small? As easy to palm? And does it sit as low on the rod? I am only concerned with size. I need whichever is smallest and sits lowest on the rod. Quote
Super User Further North Posted April 11, 2019 Super User Posted April 11, 2019 I don't own an MGXtreme2, but I won both an "regular" MGX and an Aldebaran. I also own an an AbuGarcia LTX. Abu doesn't really change their size or shape much...if you like it, you like it...I like it, and have several. Shimano seems to have more varibility in the external shape/size. I have a Calais DC, a few Curados, the Aldebaran and a coupe others...I like them, too. I don't see much real difference in performance. If I was pinned down, I'd say the MGX sits lower, but the Aldebaran "feels" smaller...though I don't know that objective measurement supports that. The Aldebaran is certainly narrower towards the front of th ereel, if tha tmakes any difference. Quote

Guys are raving about that thing and selling off absolute gems to fund the purchase. That's heavy-ish compared to the LTX and MGX...almost an ounce more...~18%...but weight isn't everything...how it balances your rig, and how a reel casts for you is much more important. Quote

Guys are selling off those reels to pick up the Steez CT if that tells you anything. Yep. There is such a thing as too light. Happens all the time with shotguns. Not one person in 20 can shoot a sub 6 pound shotgun well...but lots of people think they like them... ...but guys selling one thing to buy another doesn't tell us anything. they're convinced whatever is new is better than what they have and they've gotta have it... CrankFate Posted April 11, 2019 Author Posted April 11, 2019 @BaitFinesse I think Steez is freshwater only, so I’m not sure. Plus the $$$ - but that is definitely a sweet super small reel. It’s about time the trend started toward very small. EDIT: Nope—it says salt resistant. @Further North I think what you’re talking about in how they feel is wideness. The abus are wider than Shimano. That’s my concern. Supposedly the mgxtreme is “smaller” but I can’t tell how much compared to other similar abus. Quote

It can if it’s meant for salt. Japan tackle says “Improved salt-resitance” But with such a small spool and the weight I’ll be throwing, I’ll cast to the end of the spool. I need a 50 size spool. With 20lb braid. Quote

I'm not terribly sensitive to things like that; I'm pretty adaptable. Quote

I wear an XXL glove, when I can find them...you'd think that'd mean I'd like a certain size reel, but it doesn't. Quote

Both reels are very light. Cast extremely well. In my opinion, the MGXtreme is slightly smaller than the Revo MGX. If you want some pics or need some dimensions, PM me and I would be more than happy to help you out. You won't be disappointed if you get the MGXtreme. Quote
freelancer27 Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 I would compare the size of my MGEXTREME 2 with my Aldebaran BFS. 4 hours ago, cadman said: I am a big Revo fan and I only fish with my Revo MGX and Gen 1 MGxtreme. Freelancer if you remember, I bought the MGXtreme from you last year. I use it for all of my 1/8 oz and 3/16 oz jigs I toss. Between the MGXtreme and the MGX I have all of my bases covered. Quote
