Another BPT idea....

I'm still struggling to enjoy the BPT as much as I enjoy the elites. It occurred to me this evening, after seeing the BPT promoting the top 10 anglers weights today, that they should take the top 10 from day 1 though to the next round, then the top 10 from day 2 (actually day 3). This would help make each day of fishing more relevant and stop the deal where the guys that really catch them on day one hardly bother fishing on day 2. It would also make it seem less underwhelming fishing for 20th place. 

 

I think my biggest struggle with the format as it is, is the irrelevance of the first day of qualifying.

So only 30 remaining would fish on day 3, taking top 10 again? Zero everyone’s Day 1 weights for Day 3 or carry over? What would Day 1 top 10 guys do on Day 3...not fish again until Day 5? 

 

I’m actually the reverse - never even turned on coverage of the Hartwell Elite event. Very little interest anymore.

Yes the remaining 30 fish the second qualifying day continuing with the weights they had on day one. The 10 guys who qualified on day one would spend the day getting all the media hype for being top 10 qualifiers, which is a large part of the new format. Their sponsorship stock would go up as a result of the extra coverage they'd get.

...and won’t be able to hold back too much on Day 3. Double 20th place’s weight (68 pounds), and that’s more than any single Day one weight. A few can coast, but no one can completely blow off Day 3.

Don't you hate how it counts for nothing coming first or twentieth in the qualifying stages? Seems like they should be motivated to come first at every stage.

Call me an old fuddy duddy. I like the BASS format. I like the idea and visual of a sack of five biguns.

I prefer it from a spectator's standpoint. I wouldn't want to see too many of these big events on my home lake though. About the only aspect of MLF I like better than the traditional format is the quick weigh and release for the health of the fish and the fishery.

I am the same. I'm still watching the Elite coverage but I'm honestly not nearly as interested or compelled by it. I will be watching BPT this weekend and not the Elites. Maybe that is partly because all of my favorite anglers are fishing MLF but it's also because MLF is a more exciting product to watch, imo.

 

I do think they will make some changes in the format as they progress in the coming years but I would rather see them try to schedule events on places with multiple lakes. Fish a different lake in each elimination stage of the tournament, sort of like how they did the last one in NC. I think that would eliminate some of the coasting and practicing some of the leaders do as they wouldn't have a reason to save fish.

How about instead of groups of 40 fishing twice, have a Group A, B, C, and D with 20 anglers each. 

 

Top 10 move on to day 5 and then the top 10-20 out of day 5 go to the championship day 6?

 

You’ll have an angler fish up to 3 times if they make it to day 6.

I think the reason they are doing it this way is so that guys don't drive all the way to a tournament and only get to fish 1 day. I believe I remember Boyd mentioning this when they were unveiling the details early on. I don't hate your idea but I can see anglers being upset with driving half way across the country for only 1 day.

I can’t get into it either. They are fishing my home river and I haven’t watched any of it, where I watched every second I could of the classic. I check what people are saying on here and that’s about it

Most days I am not able to watch the live stream for lengthy periods of time. Maybe 5-10 min here or there. That being said, I think one can learn a lot watching this format. Between getting to listen to the anglers, Marty and J.T. you can really get an idea of what kind of conditions they are up against, what areas they are targeting, baits, etc.

Love this format, after constantly reading about fish dying from weigh ins. Plus I like it cause you see who’s catching, that means more to me than someone who could just catch 7 or so fish and 5 be big. Fast paced. Only idea I would have would be that they have more than 10 anglers fish that last day

Yea, I see what you’re saying. Now they’re guaranteed 2 days plus fan appreciation/marketing/promo stuff the other days they aren’t fishing.

 

It’d be a world of suck if you had a bad day and ended up having all of those reservations and what not to pay for in addition to driving all that way.
