Frog fishin spinning rod combo for my old man

its my old mans b day and he wants to fish with me more, he refuses to learn a bait caster and he is in awe of the blow ups I get from frog fishing. so I told him I would hook him up with a good combo. all my frogging gear is bait casters and the research has not been much help for spinning rods. we fish pretty dense pads and they go on forever, so I need a good/tough set up for him. any info would be appreciated. thanks.

Presenting a frog with spinning gear is usually no problem.

Setting the hook can be tricky if the blank does not possess the horse power to sink the steel.

Braided line is a must IMO.

But it's fighting & landing a hefty bass in heavy cover where many freshwater spinning rods can run into trouble - fast.

Almost any decent mid-range 4000 spinning reel could work - as long as it some strong internals, is higher speed to pick up line quickly along with sufficient capacity to hold enough of the 40-65 lb braid.  And with todays braided line diameters getting smaller & smaller - you should be good there. 

   Very few 'typical', off the shelf fresh water spinning set ups fit the bill here as a Heavy action without being overly long is not the norm. 

 You may want to consider looking in to brands that carry inshore spinning blanks. 

These are often just a bit beefier - and in every way that would seem to benefit what you'll be looking to do.

If you want to get him a good spinning frog combo get him a dobyns sierra 705s eith a daiwa revros 300 reel. Its a 7ft heavy rod. Its almost the perfect spinning frog rod. If you want something cheaper get him an airdx mh with the revros.

 

I fish 100% spinning gear, currently i frog with a 7ft daiwa saltist heavy rod. Best rod ive used for frogging but its a little pricey. 

For the rest of my fishing i use airdx rods, its been a really good season for me

Also the penn combos in medium heavy make for great frog rods, as long as you dont throw bottom contact baits because they lack in sensitivity

Try a fenwick Hmg 7’ med hvy. It has serious backbone and reasonable price. Pair it up with a daiwa exceler reel for pretty cheap and use 20-30lb braid and you’ll be set.

One of my best friends, and tournament partners has only one hand.....lost the other in an accident. It's tuff for him to fish moving baits on casting gear, but he fishes slow stuff (jigs, plastics, drop shot, senkos, etc...) fine on casting gear. He fishes frogs on a 7' H BPS Bionic Blade spinning rod and a 3000 sized reel...he does just fine with that. He does just fine PERIOD....one hand or not, he is one of the best guys around here and wins a lot of tournaments.

I’d second the Dobyns Sierra 705sf spinning rod. Full disclosure haven’t fished with it yet but it’s got a really solid back bone and the tip has the stiffness to handle heavier lures but still loads for a cast. Have tested with 3/8 and 1/2 jigs. Got one for my wife to use for general heavier lures because she hasn’t learned to use casting gear yet.

Any 7' or so MH spinning rod will work.   I've got a Fenwick HMG that I like, but I think just about every rod brand carries something similar to that.  The suggestions of inshore spinning rigs are good ideas also.  20 or 30 size spinning reel braid & fluorocarbon leader and you're set.

 

 Something that I'm going to try this year is the notion of "finesse frogging".   I read about a guy trying this last year on this site, maybe 2 years ago, I'm not quite sure.   Anyway the idea is rather than use a big hollow body frog, use a smaller soft plastic frog.  I'm going to lead off with a Netbait frog - 4" half of which is curly tail legs.  The idea is that you nose hook this bait using a smallish weedless hook and throw it so that it lands close to the edge of the pads, mat, whatever cover you're throwing at.  After a few seconds, you pull it off and let it drop.  The notion is that fish under the pads see the bait dropping and come out from under the cover and hit it.

 

As I remember from the post that I read, the guy had good results doing this, in his opinion better than he would have using larger hollow body frogs.   I mention this because heavy spinning gear with a fluorocarbon leader is what this guy was using.   Either way, I wouldn't be afraid of using heavy spinning gear in any frogging situation.

thanks for all the info, I am going to do some research on all of them, and take him so he can look at all of them in person and pick the one he likes the best. a lot of the suggestions are mhf, would a hf be too much? my frogging rig is dc 736 I believe hxf. my main concern was the reel being powerful enough, I don't know much about spinning reels, someone mentioned 4000 series, would that be strong enough? thanks again

A hf would be ideal, its what i use

And yes a 4000 is more than enough, i use a 3000 with 20lb drag
