And the bats eat ALL the mosquitos too........ insects reproduce waaaaaaay to fast for any mammal to “clean them out.” Yes possum eats ticks and bats eat mosquito and I eat hamburger but there are still tons of possums bats ticks mosquitos humans and hamburgers. Something should have gone extinct by now ....... I will be working in areas absolutely loaded with possums while being bitten by ticks dozens of times this spring summer and fall . Here’s one of my all time favorites I hear from customers: “if you let a black snake go on your property you will never see another mouse!” Mice reproduce constantly and snakes don’t eat often. Also if the snake ate all the mice, then what does eat? All the little creatures live in a healthy balance. A predator requires prey and vice versa Quote
Super User NHBull Posted April 6, 2019 Super User Posted April 6, 2019 This year is going to be very bad.... When was in an NBC unit the joke was that we were more likely to get sick from ticks than we were from chemicals we were working with. Like other have said, long socks and pants are key. Light colors help you see the ticks better. Blousing pants are a must. Grass hold more ticks than woods. Not all ticks are created equal. Deet is your friend, as is beech or your clothes when you return. We also found that a layer of heavy cream on arms and legs, neck also created a barrier to slow the penitration down. Learn how to remove them in one piece....some good videos on this. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted April 6, 2019 Super User Posted April 6, 2019 I live in a very tick heavy area and use a combo of treated clothing and Picardian spray. It seems to work far better then DEET and is a lot less gross feeling and smelling. I don’t do long pants though, my hiking shorts are as close to 60’s basketball shorts as I can find. I check for ticks on my legs every time I move spots or have to cross brush or tall grass. With pants I end up with them latched on to me, with short shorts I rarely have one on me long enough to bite. 1 Quote
