What y’all running? Baitcaster and spinning reel setup

Hey there. I’m just curious of what y’all use for baitcaster set up?

 

 

I have Rapala cast rod with 12-20 lbs test 7 feet tall. 

Fplueger Templar 6.4.1 baitcaster reel, no magnetic or centrifugal brakes. 

8 lbs power pro dark green braided line Albright knot to 12 lbs really old monofilament line as a backing. 

I use my rod for crank bait and jerk bait mostly for bass. 

And my setup is horrible. I went back to my spinning reel fishing rod with 12 lbs braided line instead. 

I really wish I could go back to baitcaster, I’m too stubborn to attempt to master it. Lol

 

Just curous of what you guys have for bass fishing?

You sure? According to the schematic, it DOES have centrifugal brakes.

8lb braid is extremely thin for a baitcaster and going to be very difficult to manage. 

 

I'd suggest trying some mono first to get a feel for it, something in the 10-15 pound range, (I'd go with 10lb clear Berkley Big Game for your jerkbaits). It's cheap and easy to use, if you get a backlash you can't get out you're not out much. If you really like braid, once you get a feel for using the real, put something like a 30lb test (which will have approximately 8lb diameter), and I think you'll find much more success using the reel.

So, I did an inventory of my rods/reels to have for insurance, just in case.

 

I  don’t have it in front of me, but there was about 80 Kistler Rods. Mostly, ZBones.

 

In reels, I have more Daiwas than other brands, but I have quite an assortment of reels. Most major brands, but just like I converted all my rods to Kistler (over about 10 years), I’m going to convert to all Daiwa over the next year or two.

 

My favorite combinations are 3 power LMH 7’ to 7’6” Zbone and Daiwa Steez SV TWS.

Too many to make it worth posting a list. Most of my casting rods are 6'6", but I have rods at 6'8", 6'9", 6'10", and 7'. A healthy mix of medium and medium heavy powers, with one heavy power. Most in fast actions but a few in moderate fast actions. The majority of my reels are 6 something to 1 gear ratio, with a couple in 7 something to 1. Line is 10-12lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid, 12-14lb Trilene, or 40-50lb Power Pro.

All my rods consist of Gloomis, St Croix and Megabass.

 

I do one Dobyns swimbait rod that I use for Muskie.

 

As for reels, I have one Daiwa and the rest are all Shimano...

I bought 6 Calais from a guy a while back for not much money because "expensive reels should have more brakes than just this knob on the right side, and it doesn't work well".  

I've known guys who have fished reels with internal brakes who never knew they were there.

(facepalm) There's this sheet that comes with reels called 'Instructions'...maybe they need to learn to read.

If you’re using 8# braid on a baitcaster, the could be why you’re having a difficult time. Switch to 12# mono at least and practice with. 

 

8# braid is too thin for a baitcaster in the hands of a newbie. If you need to use braid, then don’t go any lighter than 30# braid. Its 8# mono equivalent will give you a fair chance and mastering the bc fundamentals.

The Pfluger Templar does have centrifugal brakes.  They are internal.  I believe it came with 2 on and 4 off out of the box.  It's the Doyo 6 pin style brake.

 

I had no idea. I don’t know how am I supposed handle the reel and push to use that button. Awkward, lol.

My reels currently in this years lineup include one Shimano curado, two Abu revos, one Daiwa Tatula, and three Pflueger presidents. Rods include two St. Croix premiers, three BPS rods, and two Daiwa procaster rods. This could change depending on routine maintenance and breakage.

Not familiar with either rod or reel, but as others have said...8# braid is way too light for a beginner.  I don't know of any modern day reel that doesn't have some kind of brakes.  Right there are two things you can change to improve your casting.

 

Don't be stubborn.  Baitcasters are fun, fun, fun to use.  Please don't refer to a rod as 7' tall.
