Ok so my son loves to fish.  We are not affluent.  So we bought a stripped down old ranger 1978 maybe?   And are about to go to work on it.  I have flipped houses and am pretty handy so decking and wiring should go smoothly.  However not sure how much electronic gadgets we want/need and no clue what we can or can not do in terms of the fiberglass. First small example...   under the seats what could be considered a rod locker goes only to 6'3".  So 6' rods basically.  Could I take a hole saw and drill put a passage for a couple longer rods?   Or is putting any kind of hole in the interior fiberglass a total no no?   They could be small holes, say an inch around to accomodate a PVC tube.  I am now going to pepper you all with individual questions and hope like heck for answers.  Thanks a million in advance for any help here!!

Here is pic.  Will be sending pics of specific question areas in individual posts.  Hope this is best way to do this rather than writing a book in one post!

Welcome to the forum.  Looks like an interesting project.  Those Rangers where well made boats.  I'm a tin boat guy so I'll let the fiberglass guys answer your question.  I will suggest that you check out youtube videos.  I don't remember the exact video but I watched a guy make a fiberglass bench seat to replace one on a boat that was cracked.  You can learn just about anything on youtube.com.

Thanks guys.  Have watched many yountubes.  Will keep doing that. Took a bunch of pics today so hoping I can get some answers.  But had to wait for a reply cause if I try new posts it merges them!   Don't want one post of war and peace.  Was hoping I could do one pic per post simply asking what this is!   So in this reply I will give my first one a go!  What is this?

That looks like a transducer for an old depth finder.

Thank you!  So I can throw that out without worry.  Here's the next one.  Please hang in there with me I am a total novice and appreciating the help!   Ok so what is this hole for next to the drivers seat?  Part of exhaust somehow?   What should be on/in it?

Ok gonna try another one see if this post is separate like I hope!   What are these holes for?

Bottom pic, smaller hole on the left looks like for the stern light pole, larger one maybe old gps puck? You can see the lighter coloured gelcoat in the shape of the plastic or rubber covers that used to be installed there.

Thanks!   I should have known that.  Even I should have figured that out on the light!   Ok now that you mention the gelcoat impression on the larger hole I am guessing has something to do with the exhaust?  Cause one faced forward and one backwards.  So wondering if that is to set up a wind tunnel effect through the gas tank area in back?

Picture of that

It's not for the exhaust because outboards directly exhaust from the motor. It's for preventing gas-fume buildup in the enclosed space. If that ducting wasn't there and gas fumes collected...one spark from the battery and BOOM.

Thanks!   So it looks like that ducting goes to that afformentioned hole by the drivers seat but that seems counterintuitive to me.  Wouldn't you want the air to go through the compartment and exit out the other side that opens to the back?

That's how I'd route it. Course with my old runabout I didn't have to worry about that as the battery/gas compartment was open.
