are fenwick hmg a good rod

They are ok, mid range rods. I own one for cranking and it handles fine.

I don't have one but they look like good rods. It seems that they spent a lot of time on that reel seat. From their website:

  • AAA Cork full grip handle
  • Sea-Guide Soft Touch Alien Reel Seat with Positive Lock design provides a secure platform for all reels
  • Carbon Bound blanks are spiraled with carbon thread for additional strength and precise action
  • Fuji® Guides with stainless steel deep pressed frames with alconite inserts
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty

Can't go wrong with one for a $100. I'd maybe go Veritas, SLX, and 13 black (in that order) first though. I know a couple guys that seem to have formed a cult-like following around the HMG though, so they are definitely not bad.

The older hmg rods were great in my opinion.  The newer ones I dont much care for tho they may be great as well. In the 100 range the shimano slx, dobyns fury or bps carbonlite are the ones I'd be looking at.

I got a current generation Aetos 7' MH casting rod (picked it up on clearance) and it's actually a really great stick. Very light, above average sensitivity. I've kept it around because I find it to be a perfect stick for fishing 3/8oz jigs shallow. Fit and finish on it is quite nice.

I do not own one but have held some in stores. They felt pretty nice to me. A bit on the stiffer side - the M/F was more like a MH/F and the MH/F is a MH+/F. If I had to pick an application for each, I would say the M/F would be a good weighted soft plastic rod and the MH/F would be a good rod for jigs in lighter cover situations. I can definitely do better for $100, but I probably could find a HMG for a bit less as well.

I have an last generation Fenwick Hmg 6'9 ml-f spinning rod and have owned a 7ft m-f hmg. They fish one power heavier than their rating. So medium is medium heavy. Pretty sensitive and strong. Well balanced as well.

I also just bought a new carbonlite 2.0 6'8 m-xf spinning rod. I really like the feel of the Carbonlite 2.0 rods. So much so that I also bought their 6'9" Mh-xf casting rod. Would recommend checking them out too.

The SLX is nice but seems a slower taper than I like. Hear the Dobyns rods are good as are St Croix Bass x or Mojo line. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above choices. It come down to personal feel for the rod.
