Bait binder...for terminal tackle.

I’m a kayak/bank angler, so space is always at a premium. I used to carry all my soft plastics in 3600 boxes, but recently switched over to a binder. It freed up two whole boxes which is amazing. Much more organized, and easier to find stuff. 

 

I’m contemplating doing the same thing with my terminal tackle. I found zip lock style bags on eBay that have two “compartments” per bag for very cheap, so that I don’t need a whole page for 6 hooks, or 4- 3/16 weights.

 

Anyone done something similar? I’m thinking I could do the same thing I did with my plastics, and combine my two 3600’s into one simpler, and more organized container.

I use little Flambeau Tuff Tainers for my terminal tackle. I have different boxes for different applications. I bank fish so they're handy for carrying in my pocket if I'm not wearing my vest.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the little ones? That’d definitely work for a quick trip out bank fishing before dinner, but I’d be digging around my crate for 20 minutes finding the right one on the kayak. It’d add more boxes, which I don’t want.

I use one of these.  Will just about fit into back pocket of pants.  Pretty tiny. Love it

But how am I going to fit 2 3600 boxes of stuff into an even smaller 3600 box?

I try (try being the keyword here) to keep it all separate and as neatly organized as possible. 1/0 hooks in one compartment, 2/0 in another, etc. The exception mostly being weights. I’ve pretty much got two compartments there- >3/8, and <3/8. 

 

But yeah, both are pretty much full. 

 

I guess this post doesn’t really pertain to my bank fishing time as much as it does my time in the kayak. I don’t bring nearly as much with me, and it’s easy to throw one of each hook/weight, etc in a box and go. 

 

But if I’m taking the time to get out the kayak, I’m trying to utilize my time on the water as best I can. Time spent searching through the crate, or really anything that isn’t fishing or paddling is kept to a minimum.

Got it.  Totally understand the need to keep things organized.  I fish from a kayak 98% of the time and feel the same way.  I don't really fish plastics that much unless it's on a jig or a t-rig so my terminal tackle that I take along with me is fairly small.

I've tried the soft sided bait binder style holders for terminal tackle and I found that they worked ok for a while.  A season or two degraded the plastic bags.  I'd have 10 or 12 different brands/sizes of hooks, they would start out in original packages in separate zip lock compartments and after a few weeks of use, single hooks would be returned to the correct bag, but more often than not separately and not returned to the original packaging.

By the end of the first season the binder had just as many looks hooks as hooks in original packages.

Going into the second season, UV rot had started to set in, mostly because I didn't always zip the binder completely back up.  When the plastic bags failed, hooks would sprinkle out.  Pain the the butt when it happens in the boat. Catastrophe when it happens in the fishing shed and hooks get sprinkled over areas that you drive your truck & boat over.   It caused one slow leak in a boat trailer tire - could have been worse.   Made me buy a shop magnet to drag over the gravel floor of my fishing shed from time to time.   I do this several times a year and still more often than not I'll find a hook or two on the magnet.   I don't think that all of them were from the original spillages, but I think that some of them were.

 

So, that is my experience in using worm binders for storing terminal tackle ( hooks ).  They start working out ok and then over time zippers get sticky - bags fail - overall a pain and more trouble than the problem that they solve.   I think that boxes work better.

The issue with the inch thick 3601 boxes is that more often than not the tackle stores in my neighborhood are out of them.   Rogers, Dicks, Academy, Walmart - once in a blue moon you might find that size.   The last time I bought a bunch of plastic storage boxes through mail order, the order arrived and the box had been dropped - maybe several times and there were more cracked/damaged boxes then there were healthy ones.  BPS replaced them in store - over time, but I don't buy plastic boxes mail order any more.

 

That's the issue with the 3601 boxes - they are pretty popular and more often than not stores are out of them.  If you're going to have a problem, that is a decent problem to have.   If you're really going minimize, I've found that the 3501 size is more readily available - almost always at Walmart and they have the Pro-latch fasteners.   As you get older and arthritis sets into your fingers, this becomes an issue.

As a bank guy I keep my terminal tackle in the original packaging if possible and put them into a Ziploc sandwich bag.  If I need to bring extra I'll put them in a larger quart size bag.

I usually don’t put stuff back while I’m on the water, it’s usually tossed in a “catch all” tray, and put back where it belongs before I hit the water next. I can’t stand going to look for a certain lure, hook, etc. and it not being there, so I’m pretty anal about it getting to it’s spot. This doesn’t apply to anything else in my life, just tackle. ?

Ive been using a binder for quite so time. I use small laminated bags for the storage of hooks,etc. I put 2-3 of them per page. My pages are the smaller size bps sells. Ive never had a issue with the laminated bags. Also theres never been an issue with rust or condensation,in the bags.

Where did you get your bags from? I think I like that idea better

I fish from a kayak.  I keep my Elastec stuff in a finder.  I put terminal Tackle in a small divided box in the inside zippered compartment in the binder.

 

For other stuff I use a shoulder bag that holds 3 3700 boxes.  Remove the shoulder strap before putting in the kayak.  Put (stick hooks into) wet lures on a piece of pool noodle when I change out, to dry.

I use a cheap Berkley binder and have individual waterproof "Loksak" bags that hold each item.  No rust issues yet!

The bags come from -Clear Bags.com. Shipping kinda high,but ive got 4-5 different sizes,100 of each.
