Ksam1234 Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 So I’m getting the urge to get a new rod just because ! I have 5 rods all designated for specific things and my oldest being a MH/F st croix mojo bass. I’m looking to replace it for something newer and better but the issue is there is nothing even wrong with it ! I just want to buy a new rod because it’s new and flashy lol. I’m sure everyone can relate .. and I can’t even use the rod yet! How does everyone cure the itch without buying 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 26, 2019 Super User Posted March 26, 2019 Buy it - life is short. But be warned - that's how this whole mess started . . . A-Jay 8 3 Quote

I wish I even had room for all that. I was going to get an ALX IKOS. I talk to Alex himself and it sounds like an amazing rod for the price. But ahhh I can’t take myself to get it, and obviously if I get a new rod I have to get a new reel ? 1 Quote

wisconsin heat Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Don't buy it, build it! I've gotten into rod building and seems to justify getting a new rod to me. Getting to build it any way you want it is great! and the process of building it is a fun activity in itself! I too struggle fighting the urge to buy fishing stuff just because. Digging through all of the stuff I do own and actually seeing how much I have usually helps me tell myself I have too much tackle and I don't need anymore. But like A-Jay said, life is short! Just buy it!! 2 Quote

EGbassing Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 How do you get rid of the itch to buy a $150 rod? Easy. Buy a $250 rod. 1 2 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 26, 2019 Super User Posted March 26, 2019 My wife is my antidote to the bait monkey. Me: "DSG has the Dobyn's Fury rod I want on sale!" Her: Pick one... "How many rods do you need?" "Don't you have rods you bought over the winter that you haven't used yet?" "The driveway needs to be sealed this year" "Didn't you want to go on a fishing excursion when we go to Florida in July? Me: "Yes dear... Hey, when is Father's day?" 1 1 Quote
microotter Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 My price per bass is really high this year ? 2 1 Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted March 26, 2019 Super User Posted March 26, 2019 May I introduce you to the 6-bass rod system? And then there are other species and specialties like dedicated hollow body frog and swimbait rods. 1 Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Wait, there is a reason to buy fishing stuff more than just because? Who knew?! 1 Quote

As a retirered enlisted man - that's a slipperly slope. Paying taxes is like contributing to my fixed income. It hurts but I don't care. A-Jay 3 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted March 26, 2019 Super User Posted March 26, 2019 I can certainly understand why, @A-Jay. As civilians we save and put taxed money in IRA's, Stocks, Bonds and Mutuals only to pay taxes on it yearly. Circle of life. Best to get away from this thread before they shut it down. 1 Quote
Derek1 Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 I find the urge is not so bad when I can actually go fishing. It will be a long time before I’m down to a dollar a fish. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 26, 2019 Super User Posted March 26, 2019 If you have 5 technique specific rigs, just be mindful that there are more techniques that you might not have a rig for. Lets say you got a jig rig, crank rig, spinnerbait rig, finesse spinning rig and a flipping stick. Will your jig rig handle 5/16 Eakins finesse jigs AND half ounce or heavier football jigs? How does it handle worms? Big & little worms? Might need another rig or two. Say you got a spinner bait rig. Every time you desire to throw a chatter bait are you going to stop and retie? There is going to be a time when you're going to want to throw smaller, quarter ounce or so spinnerbaits. Your current rig handle that ok? Your flipping stick can double as a Bubba drop shot rig. All you've got to do is stop and tie a few knots. Believe me, it is MUCH easier to put the flipping stick down and pick up the Bubba drop shot rig. The same "logic" applies to crank rigs, spinning rigs and numerous other rigs I haven't mentioned yet. One of the cool things about fishing is sooner or later everyone finds their own level of quantity/quality of gear necessary. Me, I'm of the opinion that I can buy more fishing gear, but I can't buy fishing time, so I try to cover as many bases as possible with quality gear that I can afford at the time. Currently I'm 66 and I've had this addiction for a while now. Gear is accumulated over time and so at any one time it doesn't seem to bite that much. Other guys take a more minimalist approach and I can appreciate that. I did that for a while during my post college - pre first decent job days. I was a meat fishing bush hippie and 3 or 4 days a week I fed myself and often some friends and I threw one bait 90% of the time. My advice is if you can afford it and it doesn't impinge on any other fiscal responsibilities you might have - go ahead and score more gear. Remind yourself that it could be worse - if you had a booger sugar habit, at the end of the day all you'd have to show for it would be a runny nose. 1 Quote
Ksam1234 Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 @Fishes in trees haha booger sugar now that’s funny, but yeah it makes sense. No it really doesn’t hinder any other expenses. Me and my wife both have great jobs and work lots of overtime I just can’t ever justify spending I guess. I have a designated rod for cranks and Treble baits, jerkbaits specific rod, frog/heavy cover rod, heavier jigs and worm rod and a lighter finesse rod for weightless worm or lighter stuff. Oh I guess I have 6 rods. Because I have a rod for chatterbaits/spinnerbaits Quote

There's your answer. My answer to this is very simple.....if there is something I WANT but do not require I check my finances. If the purchase takes away from something else, I do not buy it. My wants are secondary to the family...period. If not.....GO FOR IT! 2 Quote
