I did once catch a male that clearly had spawned and was probably guarding fry or just left them. Poor guy was exhausted and almost didn't make it. Shakey head fishing from shore. Quote

OCdockskipper Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 If it is too dark or windy for sight fishing, most topwaters will draw a defensive strike from males and a subtle slurp from females. Even if you miss them, they have given away their position. For sight fishing, Ned rig, lizard (T-Rig) & Senko (weightless wacky) in that order. A 1/16th oz TRD won't spook the fish if you accidently cast on the nest instead of past it, and it's buoyancy makes it look like it is rummaging thru the nest. Quote

Hooked him and he didn't fight? Just curious I hooked him about 40 ft out from the shoreline. He didn't really give much of a fight at all. I unhooked him and took 2 quick photos before I released him. When I put him back in the water he just sat there with his mouth open and rolled over. I lipped him and move him around for a little bit and released him again and he closed his mouth and swam a couple of inches and rolled over again. This time I just grabbed him by the tail and pushed him around for a minute or two before he decided to quickly swim away. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, hopefully none of his buddies or potential mates see it. Poor guy looks like he hasn't eaten for weeks! Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted March 26, 2019 Super User Posted March 26, 2019 All of the regular "creature" baits weighted but the most fun is a Yamamoto DShad in pink. I can see it, I can let it flutter down to the bed and if the wind is not blowing, I can work it right where I want it. If it's windy, a weighted 3 or 4 inch Senko is next in line. Finally, a Yamamoto Twin Tailed Hula Grub is deadly on a 1/4 oz football head jig for deeper beds or dragging. Quote
