I just purchased a 1983 astroglass 175v with a 80hp mercury on it. I'm looking to get it ready for fishing this season and am having trouble deciding how big of a trolling motor I need. I've found 3 different weights for the boat on different forums and was wondering if anyone has any info on what kind of thrust I'd need for this boat

A boat that size I wouldnt go with any less than a 70 lb thrust and a 24v system would be best as it wont drain as fast and should provide plenty of power. You definitely dont need an extremely powerful motor like a 112 or something similar but a 70 should work.

I can't recall what the battery compartment is like for '83 Astroglass? Most bass boats during the early 80's were still using 12V TM's, a few had switchable 12-24V requiring 2 each 12V deep cycle batteries and that is key, 2 TM batteries.

12V-45 to 55 lb thrust or 24V-70 lb thrust, the 24V is preffered for longer battery life at mid thrust range use.

I can easily fit 2 12v deep cycles on one side and a 3rd for the cranking battery in the compartment. On board charger is going to be complicated but the batteries fit easily. I found a 70lb minn kota powerdrive today that I think were going to go with. Thanks for the info!

I've got a 16ft fiberglass bass boat (older) and I had a 55lb on 12v on the front and it was severely under powered.

I upgraded last spring to a 24v 65lb maxxum and I never go past the 5 setting, even in 20mph winds. Batteries have lasted me 2 days of straight fishing without needing a charge.

So I'd say 65lb 24v would be the minimum for you.
