WRangler506 Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 Is it true that a st croix ML runs heavier than most? What would be some lighter mediums? I love a st croix ML, the Medium feels to stout in the store, can t seem to bring myself to try one, but I'm looking for a MF spinning rod 150 to 250 range. How would the st croix medium spinning compare to the feel of an avid x casting medium? Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 My experience speaking in general. G Loomis sets the standard for power. St Croix runs on the heavy side of power. Dobyns runs on the lighter side. Abu Garcia runs on the heavy side. Quote
kschultz76 Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 No personal experience but from what I’ve read Phenix rods run light. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted March 25, 2019 Super User Posted March 25, 2019 There isn't an industry standard for rod power. Most rod companies, generally, are different. St. Croix makes the best MLXF blank for a spinning rod. Quote

Fishin' Fool Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 I thought I heard that Fenwick runs on the lighter side of power too Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 25, 2019 Super User Posted March 25, 2019 Yes, St Croix generally run a little more powerful than most others. It's very difficult to evaluate power in a store. Modern hi modulus rods with small, light , guides just don't respond to anything other than gently deflecting them on a carpet. Even that is not very good. Best is to know the ccs numbers for all. You'll more easily get social security numbers. Let me get this straight. You have an ML St Croix that you love, but you seem to be wanting something a little heavier, but you won't simply buy a M power St Croix, which would be the next logical step up in power. I'm not sure anyone can help you. Seems to me if you buy a "light power M" you'll end up back at your ML St Croix. Buy a M St Croix. It will be a great rod for something. One cannot have too many rods. 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 25, 2019 Super User Posted March 25, 2019 When you say "power", do you mean upper blank stiffness? Or do you mean the power of the body once the upper portion has been loaded? jj 1 Quote

I'll add that in the Fenwick line HMG's and Elite tech's seem heavier than rated, HMX's seem spot on in spinning, and lighter in casting. Daiwa's are all over the place, trending lighter, but some are heavier. Shimano's have always felt heavier than rated to me. Most Berkley rods feel just about right. Falcon rods are way lighter than rated. Kistlers run on the lighter side of their ratings. Lew's rods all feel heavier. Cabelas and BPS rods feel about right. Halo's feel lighter than rated. The Skeet Reese W&M rods all feel lighter (and like crap might I add LOL), and there are probably more that I have fished with but can't remember....I have used a lot of different rods. 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 25, 2019 Super User Posted March 25, 2019 Power is about the whole rod. You don't fish just the tip, and you don't fish just the "body." In CCS the POWER number is the weight it takes to deflect the rod to 1/3 its total length. If two rods of the same length have the same power, but one is "X fast" and one is "fast" ACTION, the X fast will have the softer tip. CCS measures the power and the action and yields objective values (numbers) to describe the rods/blanks. One might argue about certain details of it, but it beats describing rods as "heavy-moderate" all to heck. Too bad you don't have the numbers for the rods you are considering. It is not just about fly rods, but can be used for any rod. http://www.common-cents.info/ 1 Quote

I think the fenwick etbs might be that, but I haven't compared all rods. I likely will try an avid x medium, but was searching for something just a bit lighter, since they run a little stiffer. I'm sure it would work great though, many seem to like them. 13 hours ago, Fishin' Fool said: My experience speaking in general. G Loomis sets the standard for power. I still have not yet bought a loomis, but their medium might be exactly what I'm looking for. I want to try a loomis medium around 7ft, something above the e6x line. Quote

I have a NRX 872s and a GLX 892s both rods I got at a sale price. That I think you'd love. When Tacklewarehouse does their 15 or 20% off sales does that include G Loomis rods? If it does stretch your budget and hold out for a GLX. The problem is once you go there you want to upgrade all your rods. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 Forget the power rating altogether and look at the lure wt rating. Start there then see if your choice has the backbone for the cover. 2 1 Quote
Drew03cmc Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 Damiki runs light. Their Medium Angel EX I have is a super light medium. My MH isn't medium heavy at all. My M Loomis is perfect for shat I use a M for (1/4oz spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigs, chatterbaits, Ploppers up the 75 in weight. I just got a Damiki 6'6 H, so time shall tell. Quote

In my experience, the ideal lure weight usually seems to be near the upper end of the recommended weight range on the rod. 1 Quote

I just ordered a Legend walleye 7ft MLF and wanted to order an average medium roughly 7ft. I have been wanting to try an NRX, but I need a sale to justify it. I'm currently in Orlando Florida for the kids, and every single overpriced activity we do is like watching legends and NRX rods fly out the window. Ridiculous..... lol. Maybe when we get back I'll find a sale on an NRX or ebay lightly used. 4 minutes ago, portiabrat said: I feel like the recommended lure weight ratings on St Croix rods are too low. I've fished many of their ML rods near or at the max limit and it feels like it should. 4 hours ago, Delaware Valley Tackle said: Forget the power rating altogether and look at the lure wt rating. Once fishing time starts, I rarely read anything and spend all my available time fishing once the weather changes. I've just found that some rods feel heavy or light even w trhe same ratings, and I don't seem to like the heavier mediums. I'm trying to switch to casting for anything above 3/8 or for sure by 1/2 oz. Then i use my MF and MH rods. For what it's worth, in my opinion the fenwick ETB medium fishes like a true medium should, but their warranty has left me wanting to not fish their rods anymore, so looking for an equivalent rod. Can speak from experience, the Phenix Feather in a MH is what a M feels like in pretty much everything else (love that rod btw. It is unbelievably light. Sensitivity is under-par, but I'm comparing it to rods that are 25% more money). Quote
thinkingredneck Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 My Fenwick Eagle M is a lighter action than my BPS, or Abu, if that helps. Quote
