My Lowrance won’t turn on

This is my first boat and I’m clueless. It’s a 1987 Laser my FIL bought.

 

We’ve had it the last two years and the last time out the Lowrance didn’t turn on. I finally have time to figure out why it’s not working. 

 

Also, my trolling motor only lasted about 3 hours until it died.

 

This is after having it charged for a few days.

Batteries or charger are shot.

A fully charged battery doesn't mean it's a good battery. You can charge any battery to full but if it can't be put under load, it's useless. It sounds like you have a weak battery. Load test it.

Turn it off. Blow on it. Turn it back on.

This sounds dumb, but on one of my lowrance units I had to push the connector in really hard or it wouldn't turn on. Make sure it is really plugged in.

Dielectric grease is your friend.  Use it on all plug and bulb connections.  Use it on locks as well.

Lowrance is an interesting name for wife/girlfriend!?

If you Lowrance unit is old, then the company will not repair it and thy will tell you to buy a new one.

 

If you can find a local guy who can fix the unit then give him a try. You can also look for a computer/electronics repair shop to find out if they are willing to test the unit and try to make repairs.

 

As for your trolling motor, how old are the batteries? As stated above, just because the little green light is on your charger it does not mean the battery is holding a charge.

 

Invest in a simple load tester and note if the battery is below a 12 or a 12.5 reading. If so, considering replacing the battery.

 

Be sure to have a paddle with you so you can return to the ramp.
