Mattsteven Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Looking at either Megabass orochi, destroyer, or a Dobyns champion xp. Usually fish pretty much only fish Dobyns but wanted to try smothering else. Itll be paired up with either a ci4 or a fk. Thanks, Matt Quote
Joshua van Wyk Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 If I'm going to spend that kind of money it would be on a Gloomis or Megabass. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 19, 2019 Super User Posted March 19, 2019 Welcome aboard, Matt! Good luck with your pursuit! Sorry I can't help as my most expensive rod is a MLXF St. Croix Legend Tourney Walleye. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 19, 2019 Super User Posted March 19, 2019 They will all be great in that price range. Look for personal preference things. Grip material, solid vs split grip, hook keeper, color, reel seat, etc. At that price point, that's what I would consider. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 19, 2019 Super User Posted March 19, 2019 Have a look-see at these: Quote

TBAG Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Like someone else said, when it comes down to that price a lot of it is personal preference. I suggest you try them before buying if at all possible. For me in that price range I like the offerings of St. Croix, Loomis or Dobyns. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 19, 2019 Super User Posted March 19, 2019 Consider a custom rod from DVT http://www.delawarevalleytackle.com/ Production rod: G.Loomis PR844S http://www.gloomis.com/content/gloomis/northamerica/usconv/en/homepage/PDP.P-POPPING_ROD_SERIES.html Quote
thunderblack Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 MB spinning rods are my favorite. I have fished every high end spinner I could get my hand on and keep coming back to the MB rods. Orochi XX rods are awesome. Addermine is unreal as well. If you like jerkbaits look up the ronin. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 19, 2019 Super User Posted March 19, 2019 Looks like June. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/catpage-SHIMNORODS.html?from=basres Quote
punch Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 As a spinning rod addict I have to say that in that price range the top contenders are a GLX or NRX (you can get used NRX spinning rods for 325ish), St Croix Legend Xtreme/X/Elite, Shimano Expride, or the MB Addermine. If you want to save a few bucks, the Tatula Elite rods with AGS guides are a great sub $300 option. Quote
anderb54 Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Get you an Addermine. The perfect finesse spinning rod. Balances super well with a Stradic CI4+ and is super sensitive. Perfect tip for finesse plastics like ned rigs and light shakeyheads, great for dropshotting, and I've found it to be an awesome rod for spybaiting as well. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted March 20, 2019 Super User Posted March 20, 2019 As Kent mentioned above... If I'm spending 200+ for a rod it'll most likely be a custom built rod. oe 1 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted March 20, 2019 Super User Posted March 20, 2019 If you're spending $300+, I'd seriously look custom. Give DVT shout. He'll hook you up Quote
punch Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 My biggest problem with custom rods is the resale value. If I'm going to spend four hundred bucks on a megabass, Loomis or St Croix.. I know I can sell it in a couple years for a lot of money AND pretty easily. Even if the custom rod is really nice, nobody wants to buy them used on the aftermarket for anywhere close to what you paid for it. For some reason people are kind of turned off by used custom rods. For that reason alone I'll never buy a custom rod. 1 Quote
Chowderhead Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 Love my St. Croix Legend X - think it works well with my ci4+ Quote

I have two of them, one of them which I still love and use all the time but the other one sits neglected because I made some poor component decisions and my tastes in how I grip a spinning rod have changed. I’m more or less stuck with the it so I just use it as a loaner I have friends who come along who aren’t as fussy as I. Quote

Exception would be for certain swimbait rods as long as you don't get them personalized - rods by LDC and MOAM hold their value very well. Quote

As in you can tell some guy put it together out of a bunch of generic pieces in his basement. You must be seeing some really incompetent rodbuilders offerings then. There are a lot of hacks out there that have no business selling rods, but I'd put my basement built rods up against any manufactured rod for asthetics, performance and fit and finish. Quote
