I have the lews superduty g and am putting on 65# 4 strand power pro. Website lists capacity at 150/50 braid.

Theres a small hole on the spool so I dont think I need mono backing. I cant imagine how the line will slip/spin if tied through the hole.

Also I'll pull it through the guide but do I tie the line around the whole spool and through the hole (top picture)? Or the bottom picture is only through the hole and tied? then it will around the spool after knotted. Which one? Finish with 3 overhand knots?

Not worried about saving money with the braid. It's a flipping and punching rod. Probably can only get 75yds on there anyways.

Electrical tape

Dosnt really answer my question. I dont think I need backing because of the hole in the spool (pictured). Which pic is the right way to tie it?

You don't need to tie it. Put a small piece of electrical tape on your line and tape it to the spool. Put your line on, go fishing.

More than that - using the spool capacity calculator HERE

https://www.pattayafishing.net/fishing-reel-line-capacity-estimator/

It estimates 115yds of 65# using PP Spectra - check your line's specs at the manufacturers page for the numbers you need.

Thanks. Gonna check that out. Probably wont fill it up anyways since it's a pitch/flip/punch reel.

I've always just used the old-faithful Arbor Knot around the spool - whether it's braid, mono or flouro...spinner or BC

Put the line through the spool holes exactly like the photo and tie a arbor knot, no tape needed.

My top image then? The bottom is only through the hole then tied. Not around the spool yet.

It's just 10,000X easier

It's more work to put tape around the spool then tying a simple arbor knot that will not fail.

Use the hole.  That's what it's there for.  Just a couple of granny knots will do.  Backing?  If you wanna save a few bucks yes.  If you are worried about slipping, that's what the whole is for.

Like Tom said, tie it through the hole with arbor knot. I will avoid tape if possible because the adhesive gets on the spool and can get messy. If the spool has no hole, I'd rather use mono backing than tape.. imho

Do I tie around the hole only or through the hole, around the spool then knot?

I'd just run the line through the hole

 and then tie the knot.

Your second pic in your first post. Tie knot from there then spool it ?

  1. Thread the line through the level wind line guide.
  2. The thread the line through the channel in the spool, as in the top pic.
  3. Bring the tag end all the way around the back end of the spool.
  4. Tie to the main line using an arbor knot.
  5. Spool up.

This will ensure not sharp edges are rubbing on the line and avoid the entile bulk of line spinning on the spool.
