ryan.v Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 I self tie jigs on my spare time. The last bundle I bought, didn't have the weed guard in. I had to glue it in. I really like Omega heads, so I bought some bulk heads to split with someone. I've encountered one problem, the Omega heads have the weed guard built in already. What's an effective way to hold back the weed guard while tying the jigs? I've tried a paperclip, but maybe mine suck or I'm bending it wrong. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 13, 2019 Super User Posted March 13, 2019 How about bending the weed guard back and wrapping a length of pipe cleaner around it & the jighead ? Easy On, Easy Off and mostly re-useable. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 13, 2019 Super User Posted March 13, 2019 I have not tried it, but I think you could bend the weed guard forward and hold it there using a thin walled cylinder slid over the head and guard. Try coin roll papers, like nickel or quarter size. Quote

Is your dilemma, tying on the skirt with the weedguard in place? If so I do that all of the time and never have a problem. However I wire tie. Are you wire tying or tying with thread? Quote

I just need it out of the way so I can wrap the thread around the collar. Quote
cadman Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Thread is hard to tie on a jig with a weeedguard. If it were me I would either use wire or if you insist on thread, I would pull the weedguard out, tie your jig and glue in a new weedguard. Just my opinion. 2 Quote
bird-dog Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 To tie skirts on my jigs, I use very thin stainless wire and a Wire Twisting Pliers. There is a little bit of a learning curve to operating the pliers, but once you get it down it’s a snap to tie skirts. Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 Where do you get small wire to tire on the skirts? Quote
DSTN Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 Check craft sections at stores or a hobby/craft store. They should have copper wire or coated wire. I use copper to tie skirts on lures where the skirt bands have started to look sketchy. 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 5, 2019 Super User Posted April 5, 2019 Just cannot resist any longer. I have never found a jig that would tie itself. But I'm still looking. 1 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 Haha I just didn't want to start a new thread but wanted to know what size wire, 22ga! Quote
DSTN Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 The stuff I use is either 22 or 24 ga. I don't remember which off the top of the head and can't find my wire since my wife borrowed it for some creation. There is a short but good thread about wire tieing here (helpful video at the end)... 1 Quote

IgotWood Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Not sure how weedguards are glued in. Is it possible to maybe heat the head with a blow dryer to soften the glue? If that doesn't work, you can try to cut them as short as possible and use a drill bit to clean out the hole with, and then glue a new weedguard in once you've tied them. Quote
