Brett's_daddy Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 Have you or would you buy a reel from an eBay seller that has zero feedback? There's a Shimano Curado DC on eBay right now for $200, the seller is new since December 2018 and has zero feedback despite apparently selling 16 of these reels already. My spidey-sense is tingling on this one...great deal for sure but you know the old adage about if something looks too good to be true. I know that eBay and/or Paypal would cover me if something went wrong but it's such a hassle. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 I think you should listen to your spidey-sense on this one. You can find out about the guy later on, y'know. jj 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 Well they gotta get a rating somehow. You could be the first . Me? I look for 97.7 ratings and above, preferably 100%, as we all probably prefer. You can always email the seller in hopes to get a "vibe", but as @jimmyjoe said, trust your spidey-sense/gut. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 If the price was good enough I would roll the dice. I don’t think I have ever though to look at a seller’s rating before though. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 Use PayPal and you're protected. A-Jay 2 Quote
Junger Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 Roll the dice, but don't get your hopes up. Like A-Jay said, use PP and you're protected. Quote
Super User webertime Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 There's another for 230 from a guy that has a rating. If you are buying now due to the coupon, would you rather pay a little more and get it vs. not getting it and wasting your time and the coupon. 1 Quote
waymont Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 I would avoid it. I just went through that with a seller "selling" Curado K reels for $135.00. New seller selling Shimano reels and gym bags. I took a shot. I got my money back but I had to wait for Ebay to step in. It took 3.5 weeks. Quote
Falkus Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 DONT BUY !!!! Dont wanna be part of a fraudulent sale - I was a victum of a fraud. Paypal isnt a HELP in my situation. I bought a Curado 70 from Ebay for $100 bucks from a seller who had like 12 postive ratings. Then I got the package from Cabelas ?. Next thing I knew, Cabelas was chasing me to pay them back and ebay/paypal wasn't very helpful. After four months, I finally got off the hook after showing them the payment/transactions and all. Cabelas decided to drop it and mark it as loss at their end. Quote
LionHeart Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Depends on what I'm buying. A $200 reel? Pass Quote

Not sure what kind of scam it was, but I was certain it was a some sort of shady deal. I was never contacted though. Quote

The best deal, may not always be what it seems.... Quote

When I got the box I was confused. I am still not sure if this was some kind of drop ship via gift card deal or what. I am certainly not as smart as most of these online criminals. Quote
Stephen B Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 I hope it was just a guy who bought it and had reward points trying to make some money. Hopefully nothing criminal involved as that would suck. My rule of thumb regardless of price is if the seller has less than 98%, I will not buy. Quote
Dogface Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 I've been shopping for a DC on Ebay for a few weeks. I was able to buy one for $230. Ebay kept sending new listings for recently posted reels. The best price for any DC they sent me was $220. Had this guy been selling them on Ebay in the past few weeks for $200 I would have seen it and looked into it. I don't see how a guy could have sold 16 and NOT received feedback. A real deal like that would generate positive feedback. Quote

My Lews Custom Pro Speed Spin came directly from Bass Pro Shops. I was never contacted but it bothered me enough that I will only purchase items from Ebay through sellers like American Legacy Fishing in the future. Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 13, 2019 Super User Posted March 13, 2019 You may be protected with Paypal, but there still is the hassle. I buy only from 99+. The ratings are so important that the reputable sellers will do almost anything to support their ratings. If there is no rating, or if it's below 99, I would skip it. 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted March 13, 2019 Super User Posted March 13, 2019 *I can understand if a seller has just started his business with e-bay , hasn't developed a customer base , etc. yet . You can ask questions and get a feel of how responsive the guy is ? As A-Jay said , you are also protected by Pay Pal . Quote
redmeansdistortion Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Pay attention to the ad, chances are it'll be taken down. I've seen plenty of ads for great deals on highly desirable reels from zero or minimal feedback sellers, if the price is too good to be true, it probably is. I almost bought a brand new Abu 6500CS Chrome Rocket last year for $100. That reel new typically goes for $200+. After watching it for a day, the ad was taken down. It didn't show up in the sold listings or anything, gone like a poot in the wind. Something else to look at is the username. The crooks like to pick usernames that are a bunch of random letters and numbers instead of something that took a degree of creativity to come up with. Just my observations. Quote
ike8120 Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 As others have said just make sure you use Paypal. That way you will have some recourse. Also if it goes south it may take 30 days to get your money back. Quote
BassThumb Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 If you have to ask on here, then you already know the answer. Use your gut. How often do you give feedback? I rarely do. That said, I would pass. Spend another $20 and get it from a reputable source. PayPal will put you thru the ringer just like any other insurance company will at times. Really, that's largely what they are. They don't want to pay out any more than they have to. I initiated a PayPal-protected return on eBay of some very nice car audio speakers. The seller gave me the wrong return address via the eBay messaging system. I shipped the product to that address and it got returned back to me. Now the return window was closed. I had screen-shotted the message showing the incorrect address. The seller actually went back and edited the message to show the right address. I didn't have the option to edit messages once they were submitted, but somehow they did. That's a nice cheat. Even despite the screenshot, PayPal sided with them. I was out $40 on shipping. Hours spent on the phone getting bounced back and forth trying to explain my case to people who could barely speak English. I had to re-sell the speakers on eBay at a net $110 loss after shipping x 2 and the eBay avg price dropping a bit. So just because it's "PayPal" doesn't mean it's foolproof. You still have to be a cautious buyer. 2 Quote
thunderblack Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Several sellers/scammers with 100% feedback and new accounts on eBay are using stolen credit cards to purchase from BPS and Cabelas (drop ship). They receive payment into their PayPal and on they go. I went through this last year. Once reported the seller will have his/her account suspended and they just start up a new one with another stolen card. I've seen this with coffee makers, sporting goods, electronics and more. I called eBay, PayPal, and Cabala's trying to sort this out on a purchase. Avoid this seller and buy from a trusted one like ALF or similar. Quote
