Super User Sam Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 Big scandal with college admissions and sports just breaking on Fox. Lots of people involved. Guy named Singer handled the fraud on the schools and coaches. Some of the payments exceeded $250,000. False SAT/ACT scores, etc. submitted on behalf of students. FBI has names of coaches, parents, administrators, and others involved. Check it out tonight on the news and newspaper. FBI says case is continuing and more charges and arrests are going to be made. From an Auburn fan: This is some pretty amazing stuff: The documents say actress Lori Loughlin -- best known for her role as Aunt Becky on the ABC sitcom "Full House" -- and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, "agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team -- despite the fact that they did not participate in crew -- thereby facilitating their admission to USC." So they bribed the athletic department. (I know the University of Tennessee situation was with the law school, and involved mostly children of state legislators (shocking!)). Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 This is what happens when the athletic department of a college/university gets more support than the academics. Sports in college are suppose to be a sideline to learning...not the main focus of an educational establishment. When did we switch that? 1 Quote

You could pay for a house on the lake and a new bass boat with that money. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 And to think they could afford these universities anyway... Guess the kiddos didn't wanna go, didn't put in the effort, weren't smart enough, so parents wanted to guarantee entry. Shameful. 2 Quote

I played major Division I baseball in the early 2000's. Even though baseball is a non revenue sport at probably every school, it was still clear early on that the focus was baseball first and academics 2nd. As long as guys stayed eligible that was all that really mattered. Look at UNC with the fake class scandal they had (and MANY other examples) of how schools have "helped" to keep student athletes eligible. Now, when you consider schools with football teams that are generating well over $100 million in revenue a year it's easy to see why athletics take a front seat. It's all about the money. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 13, 2019 Super User Posted March 13, 2019 So how long before parents of previously unadmitted youths band together to launch a class action suit? Certainly, there's got to be significant income potential loss as well as all the pain & suffering involved. Just Brutal. Someone has to pay. A-Jay 1 1 Quote

CrankFate Posted March 16, 2019 Posted March 16, 2019 The worst part is these people’s kids would’ve been just as successful no matter what school they went to. And they still could’ve gone to tons of good schools because of fame, politics and money. This scandal of I want this school instead of that school, is just another form of greed. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 16, 2019 Super User Posted March 16, 2019 Not sure why all the news emphasis is on the parents. Nothing surprising there, imo. The really horrific conduct, to me, is by the university personnel and testing people who took, and even solicited the bribes. 1 Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 16, 2019 Super User Posted March 16, 2019 Well, this isn't going to sit well. But, as a white male, I was NEVER given anything because of my sex or race. I was accepted to the University of Oklahoma based on my academic achievements, not because I was a minority. There were hundreds, if not thousands of scholarships that I could not apply for because I was not a female, Native American, Asian, Hispanic, African American, etc. I had to take out loans and pay them off. In my opinion, a college entrance application shouldn't even consider sex or race. But then we would have so many people claiming they were denied entrance because of whatever they deem to be their "crutch". It's no wonder that all the people in this case are white, the only thing they have as an advantage is money. Affirmative action is just great! 2 1 Quote

Crank, the parents believe that for their children to be ultra successful in business and politics they have to attend an elist Ivy League or other highly rated academic institution and they would do what ever it takes to get their offspring into those schools. The truth is that if their kids went to a "normal" university, like state institutions such as the big D-1 football schools, the kids would do well, have a great social life, make new friends, and get their diploma. If the elite really wanted their kids to get into higher academically ranked schools then you go down to the next football level and apply to Richmond, William and Mary, Delaware, Appy State, etc. (OK, kidding about Appy State). Sorry state or affairs. Quote

The truth is that if their kids went to a "normal" university, I agree @Sam that the parents "believe" that their kids will be more successful at a prestigious University but its also about status. If their kids get into USC the parents believe it reflects better on them and if they don't the parents are shamed by it. Look who is doing this. Its the rich, powerful, influential, and recognizable. They know these kids probably couldn't compete with more educated, dedicated and deserving kids so they cheated. They bribed people to get them in. Ultimately, its about the ego of the parents. 1 Quote

A groups is suing to get their application fee's returned. They are not likely to win as only a couple of those involved were actually college employees.......On a side note, this has been going on for a long time. If a college thinks it going to be able to name a new building after you and your kids meet minimum standards, your in Quote
