Ive been thinking of trying a new bait. Decided to go with a Jig N Craw. Walmart Only has 1 type of Jig. They sell the Gerald Swindle Matrix Jig in a Black/Blue 3/8 size. is this jig any good? How about the 3/8 size,is that an all over decent size?

Wal Mart didnt have any trailers . Whats a good choice of color and style/brand for a trailer? Do I want to match the jig color when choosing a trailer,or should I go with a contrasting color?

Would this creature bait be a good choice as a trailer:

I have some of these in a junebug color. They seem big, what if I was to shorten it?

I can't believe that WalMart only has one jig in stock ;)  I prefer a 1/2 oz for most of my jigging, although I have them in sizes from 1/4 to 3/4.  As for trailers, you can add anything you like, from pork to plastic.  I'm fond of the Uncle Josh Pro-Cut Frog or any of the craw-type plastics that are out there.  If the body is too long, just remove part of it.  I don't like the trailer to stick out too far behind the jig.  I'll also trim the skirt to just behind the bend of the hook.

I've used Wal-Mart's 0.99 bulk jigs to Tungsten jigs at 5.47; I've used 3/16 to 7/8 oz jigs; I've used just about every pork/plastic trailer available.

I use 3/8 oz the most in Black-N-Blue with a craw worm trailer the most  ;)

I think im finally starting to get it(jig fishing that is). I took the Jig I bought, trimmed the skirt the best I could, and then doctored some of these gambler bacon rinds up. I cut the long twirl tail appendage off and then cut the bait off right at the triangular wing looking things. Looks pretty neat on a jig. I then tied about 7 ft of line onto it and played around with it in my 55 Gal Aquarium. I see what trimming the skirt does- It makes the fibers dance even when the bait is at rest with the slightest twitch.

I see how the bait behaves ,seeing that makes me understand how it should look and how slow I need to fish it to make it look natural. ;)

The single tail Bacon Rind you show may be good, but I like the double tail Brush Hog creature bait when not using a chunk style or Paca Craw by Netbait.

This is one I copied from a Gander Mountain brand (Black Magic) that floats.

75% of the time my color is anything green or brown skirted jig in 3/8 oz.I think 3/8 oz falls the best where i fish.If the water is really calm and warm i'll go to a 1/4 slow falling seems to work better in the dog days of warm and no wind. You can even put a wooly bug by yum(i know walmart sells these) as a trailer.Any weird kreature baits work.I like to try and keep the trailers fat and short.

My favorite jigs are made by guy joe.

I always throw my bait on shoreline and raise my rod and watch what my lure is doing. This way i know what my lure is doing when i cast out.If you see what it's doing i think you have a better understanding how to work that bait. Some baits require little or no movement sometimes.Like somebody mentioned. So everytime i buy a new jig or trailer i pay close attention to what it does for the first time.Works like a charm for me.

What depth and type cover or structure do you plan on fishing a jig?You gonna flip visible cover?Fish offshore deep structure or cover? What would you call the water clarity where you fish(stained, muddy,or clear)?

I plan on throwing the bait in a rocky area. I know crayfish live in the rocks so thats probably good a spot as any to throw. Theres some steep ledges that go into the water and im gonna search there too. Water seems pretty clear. Ill post a pic to let you all judge how clear the water is and how good the visibility is,the pic will be up tomorrow.

Sounds like a football head is what I would use.I like PB&J or brown(maybe purple flash).Twintail grubs work well in clear water as do most narrower profile trailers.

Just slowly dragging a jig and letting it fall naturally as possible off the rocks can be a great presentation on the right days.Good Luck

I prefer a brown and purple pepper jig, with a zoom mini chunk in black and blue.  It is friggin' amazing when you try it!  I caught 5 really nice fish.  I lost it soon after that when a huge fish decided to wrap it around some underwater structure...  I now have a cheap renegade 3/8 ounce jig, with a worm trailer.  The color is brown and orange, and I had to modify the hook guard, by shortening it a bit, at an angle.  It got a lot of hits, but not as many as I had previously!  I will be getting more brown and purple pepper jigs, as they seemed the big ticket!  ;)  JMHO, and my experiences.  ;)  Hope it helps!
