Daiwa Fuego CT or Shimano SLX

I bought a few Fuego CTs last summer as I was just getting into baitcasting setups. So far so good. I need 1-2 more now for this year, should I try an SLX or stick with the Fuego? The prices are similar. Which one do you like, and is there much of a difference between the 2?

You have a few Fuegos. You should definitely grab a SLX. It's a fantastic reel. My brother has Fuegos and recently added the SLX and loves it. He has Chronarchs and Curado Ks already, so he has a point of reference.

I have the SLX and had the fuego, liked both. The differences between them are mainly braking systems. The SLX uses a centrifugal braking system while the Fuego uses magnetic. With the SLX there is no external brake adjustment unlike the Fuego meaning you have to pop the slide plate every time you need to make an adjustment. Both braking systems work well. The SLX is just a tad bit smaller in height and width but both palm comfortably. They are both both quite smooth but the SLX feels more refined than the Fuego IMO. 

 

Both are great reels but where you already have a few Fuegos it wouldn't hurt to try the SLX to find what you like and what your preferences are.

You really need an SV spool'd Daiwa in your life.  But out of the two choices, I'd just pick which one is the most comfortable to hold.  Both models cast plenty far, so whichever feels the best on the rod it's intended for is my thinking.

I'm a self proclaimed Shimano fanboy and have several Curado K's. Last season I picked up a Fuego CT off the Bay for ~$50 because of all the praise it gets on this forum. I was intrigued by how many people recommended it, and they were right. It's a great reel all around that casts well, palms good and I really like the color.

 

But, I grabbed an SLX locally for a deal I couldn't pass up about a month ago. I've not fished with it yet, just threw it on a Dobyns Sierra 734c and cast it around the yard. To say I'm impressed is an understatement! I actually think it casts better and palms much better than my Curado K's.

 

So, IMO you can't go wrong with either reel but if I had to choose, I'd pick the SLX all day.

IS the SLX more of a low profile design, better for lighter baits and not cranking fish from cover or heavy baits? Or doesnt matter much?

The braking system on the Fuego is awesome and easy to dial in. Is the SLX just as forgiving during and after initial 2 minute setup to get the adjustments right?

Yeah I thnk I will pick one up to try. Besides they will look great on my blue Aetos or Champion, and fish dig that.

Overall smoothness and castability the SLX wins that one. The SLX is my crankbait rod in a 6.3:1. The Fuego feels a ton stronger and shines in heavier applications such as frogging, punching, Texas Rigs etc.
