Crow Horse Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 What exactly makes up a high end spinning reel as compared to the middle of the road spinning reels? There are many sub $100 reels that perform quite nicely and there are a number of spinners that cost many times that amount. What's the difference?.... and are they worth it? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 10, 2019 Super User Posted March 10, 2019 Strength, weight & quality of Materials used. Engineering & design; for spinning reels that often shows up in the gearing. Presence of quality seals designed to keep water out. The number of, type of & location of quality bearings. Often the case for any reel, the better ones have more of the above and are priced accordingly. The economy brands / models have less and the price reflects that. An educated experienced shopper can usually select a happy medium between the two and be very satisfied. Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort. The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory. A-Jay 9 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 10, 2019 Super User Posted March 10, 2019 @A-Jay sums it up nicely. Take a $20 to $30 reel and ask yourself what does the company that makes it have to sacrifice to get the cost that low. A reel can have a Steez body but have a hamster on a wheel under the hood... 1 Quote
Pikeman12 Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Then again though you do have some quality spinning reels like the Pflueger President that is priced very well for what you get out of it. 1 Quote

Man you got that right! I have about 8 president XT’s, they are absolutely a fantastic reel for the price. In a lot of cases you get what you pay for, but sometimes once you get to a certain dollar value, it seems like the “advantages” do not match the increase in price. 3 Quote

I dont have high end but do have/had a number of $150-200 reels Supreme XT's Stradics & CI4. I dont feel I gained anything over say my $60 Daiwa RG-AB that was on sale for $48 actually prefer the RG-AB to the PFL president. Wont go over $100 on spinning reels again. 1 Quote

I think with reels especially you have diminishing returns once you start going up in price beyond the mid-range stuff. Are magnesium frames, a couple ounces in weight savings, slightly tighter tolerances and ceramic hybrid bearings nice? Sure, but it's not going to put more fish in the boat in most cases. But I think for a lot of guys that can afford it, fishing high end gear just adds another layer of enjoyment. It may not be noticeable to some but fishing day-in day-out for years with gear and not getting fatigue or worrying about the gear crapping out is nice. I don't think I've ever paid more than 150 for a reel, bait caster or spinning, (granted I usually look for sales) and truthfully doubt I'd ever need to spend more. But I'm sure if I can ever afford to own high-end gear I probably will. Quote

I haven't used any high-end spinners...nor mid-ranged one's either...though I have handled a few at the local Dick's to check them out. I do know that my Pflueger Trion and my Mitchell Avocet RZ worked well for me last year. After a winter cleaning and re-lube, both feel like they did new out of the box. Both are considered 'budget' reels, but considering my usage, I don't see a need to spend more for reels that I don't think I'll really feel much difference. Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted March 10, 2019 Super User Posted March 10, 2019 I use Shimano Stradic CI4+ spinning reels that cost around $230. Last year I bought a Shimano Syncopate which cost $30 just to see how much difference I would notice. The Syncopate was noticeably heaver. 37% heavier to be exact. It was also noticeably harder to turn. However, I would not say the Syncopate was too heavy or too hard to turn. The Stradic cost seven times more than the Syncopate. Is it worth it? I would have to say no. I have no doubt that I could catch just as many fish with the Syncopate. I would hope and expect the Stradic to last longer but probably not long enough to justify the difference in price. That said I will continue using Stradics as my go to spinning reels. Why? Fishing is my passion, I spend a lot of time fishing, and I think that justifies using quality equipment as long as I can afford it. Quote

I have the same sediment about the Diawa Fuego LT. Quote
