I always think I buy too many lures and then I log onto this website and look at some of the pictures and I feel better about my addiction.

I look at lure prices and scratch my head. Brand A 3/8oz twin spinner - $8 each, brand B - $2 each...I know which one I'm buying. Four of brand-B for the price of one brand-A = no brainer to me.

To think that people pay upwards of $100 for ONE lure...when one of my rod/reel combos cost that is insane IMO.

<- Frugal by necessity, not desire.

Bait Monkey thanks you.

I don't think that I have bought 17 frogs in my life.  I don't lose them.  Ever.  And it takes significant use/abuse to wear one out.  You should be set....your kids and grandkids, too.

At 71 I am sure you are right.  When I researched frogs, there were quite a few mentioned as being very good.  Not knowing which would be good for me I am trying 8-9 different kinds.

I don't get to do much frogging here in PA, but I usually wear out 1 or 2 a summer. Usually they get turned inside out enough times that they either tear or they get rethreaded by a hook point.

I never have either, but am hoping to do more...if I can get out.  Have 2 weeks vacation coming up the first of April and will be in Florida.  Hope to use a few of them there.

We get it. You are on a fixed income. But everything you post doesn't have to insinuate that those who choose to pay for high quality gear are somehow out spending what it takes to catch fish. You do this in every thread. It's getting old.

Sometimes the $8 spinnerbait is actually 5x the $2 spinnerbait when it comes to quality of skirt, blades, and hook. But just because you can't afford it, don't make those who can feel like they are spending money when it isn't needed. I have held my tongue for a long time. But almost all your posts talk about how the "cheap" stuff works just as well as the expensive stuff.

Don't complain about lure costs. I just spent $27.00 on bobber stops.

I bought one of those lifetime supply bundles too. Bobber stops everywhere in my boat.

Let’s say a guy is a workaholic his whole life, never taking time out to enjoy life, and then he finally retires with a boatload of savings. Maybe he has health issues that will severely limit the number of years he has left to fish, and fishing is one of the few things that makes him happy. Is it right to call him insane if he spends more money on fishing equipment than you do?

I’m frugal myself, but I try to keep in mind that I don’t always know what is going on in other people’s lives, and I try to refrain from judging them, especially out loud and to their face.

I hate to see personal attacks here. Most people here are really nice and civil. It may be under-appreciated. I used to hang out on another fishing board that was really good, but it got really bad with the personal attacks and now there’s only a small number of people that still go there. I’m not one of them.

My advice would be figure out how much money you have, figure out how much money you are spending, make a budget, and stick to it. If you can budget $300 swimbaits, $900 combos, 1/64oz tungsten, etc. go for it; Just make sure you have enough in the bank to make sure you are taken care well beyond your old age. There is a fishing budget for everyone.

I agree. I stock up this time of year. Nearly all stores are clearancing out last years fishing  inventory.

Sometimes you can get crazy deals on high end equipment.

When it is too cold to fish, I enjoy visiting the local stores looking for discounts. It helps beat back the winter blues.

Fortunately here in the Kansas City metro, there is no shortage of sporting goods stores.

I will be the first to admit I have way too many rods and reels.  More than I can ever make good use of.....BUT....$200 reel for $98...$200 reel for $80...$150 reel for $60...$70 reel for $30...$40 rod for $17...$200 rod for $69...$230 rod for $89...$300 rod for $75...3 rod package deal totaling $870 for $340.  All brand new.  Closeouts are a great time to buy.  Of course this is all spread out over a 10 year period.  I am no relation to Bill Gates so it takes me longer to accumulate all my "wants".

There's a guy that sells huge lots of them on Facebook for cheap pretty often. I don't remember how many I bought but I should be good for years and it wasn't very expensive.

I used to buy lures based almost solely on cost. After they all got bit off or ruined from pike, I decided that paying more for durability was worth it to keep using it for more than one fish. d**n those pike

I bought 100 pcs thinking I was getting 100 bobber stops. Nope, got 100 rings with 6 stops per ring, so I too have a lifetime supply.

I almost bought one of those bundles on E-bay, but changed my mind.  i didn't know what to do with over 500 bobber stops.

I did the exact same thing, think I used the same bobber stop all season on one rod last year so I guess I’ll be good until about the year 2800 or so.

And the only good thing about the cold weather is you have plenty of time to organize it, pull everything out again, then organize it,  then maybe lay it all out again,  and then organize it.

I don't frog fish much easier, however I experience the same 1 or 2 a summer.

Always remember: A couple of bags of plastic worms, some bullet weights, and some hooks are an economic way to fish, and will catch you a ton of bass

What sites/stores are you finding these deals?  I saw some clearance stuff at Academy but I guess I went too late as there was nothing decent left.

a lot of the discounts around KC are done. I was out in a few stores today and most of the good clearance stuff is already gone. January to mid February is usually the best.

Sportsman's Warehouse has some good deals occasionally.  Right now $70 off Tatula CT Type R doesn't look too bad.  Walmart prices go up and down so you have to check on a desired item daily.  I've bought a couple rods and reels from them at excellent prices.  Believe it or not Optics Planet has an occasional deal on rods.  Shelton's Clothing & Outdoors also sells on ebay.  Check them out if looking for a Powell Inferno.  There are a few models left...$80 for $130 rod.  Let us not forget Fisherman's Factory Outlet.  My $300 rod for $75 and Curado 51E for $98 came from ohya.com, but their fishing stuff right now is almost none existent.  Good prices on gun related gear, tho.

However, often I just accidentally find these deals while researching.  Like the Pflueger reel sale.  Was looking for more reviews on the Supreme XT when I found the sale.  Posted the link here.  Bought another XT ($60 for $150 reel..paid $120 for one a week before :cry4:) and a Patriarch $80 for $200 reel).  Already have 3 of the older Patriarch XTs so I passed on the $250 reel for $100.  I like trying different reels.

Wished I could remember the name of the store where I got my last 2 Primmus reels.  They also had good deals on several other reels.  Got greedy.  Bought 2 at $104.10 ($239 reel) before posting link here.  Someone else posted back a different link to the same store with the reel going for $98 and change.  Oh well.

Lots of times I have to specifically add "ebay" to my search to get results from ebay.  No idea why.
