Super User Jigfishn10 Posted March 1, 2019 Super User Posted March 1, 2019 Hey guys, was hoping I can get some help. I want to replicate a soft plastic bait and will be making a mold out of plaster and have the following 2 questions: When you embed you soft plastic bait into the fresh mixed plaster do you lubricate the bait prior to embedding? If yes, what would you use, vegetable oil? After the first part of the mold is cured and detailed, would you lubricate the mold and bait? Again, vegetable oil? Sorry, it's been about 8 years since I made a lipless crankbait mold, so I forgot a few steps. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. Quote
BassNJake Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 I use vaseline to lube my baits before putting them into the soft plaster. ( I use Durhams water putty) I do not have to relube them before pouring the top half. When I'm done the baits pull out easily and I can still use them. I also use a mix of rubbing alcohol and Devcon 2 ton Epoxy to coat the cavities. I'll usually do 3 coats for the cavities and one coat on the entire mold. Good luck!! 1 Quote

I used a different material when I did my lipless crankbait mold and didn't have to do this step. Thanks a million, I never would have thought of that. Quote
BassNJake Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 If I dont coat the cavity, the lure comes out with a dull finish. Coating the cavity leaves the end product with a shine. I coat the whole mold for klutz protection hahahaha 1 Quote

Super User Jigfishn10 Posted March 18, 2019 Author Super User Posted March 18, 2019 Finally got some home projects done this weekend so I tried my hand at this. Epic fail... Some Lessons learned: * My first pour, the pic on the right was too thin, especially where it broke at the lure imprint. * I also think my plaster need to be thinner. I'm also changing plaster products. I have Uni-Kal Plaster I can try * More lubrication between halves. Will try it again next weekend. Quote
