People die of very common things like the Flu in the U.S., strep throat, tonsils, crack, meth and opioids, not to mention cheeseburgers, pizza and TV. We are not as sophisticated and refined as many would like to think. 1 Quote

I have never had to get a Malaria vaccination in the U.S. I also don't live in a country, where drinking the tap water is considered hazardous. I have spent a lot of time south of the border for business and vacations. it is definitely a different world. Quote

I don't understand your Malaria analogy, do you get or have you had vaccinations for smallpox, measles, polio, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and Hepatitis B. Annual Flu shots? The issue of clean drinking water just came to the forefront recently in Flint Michigan. I have spent time in many, many parts of the World in support of my profession. I agree it is very different but not necessarily worse. Mexico is probably not the best example of how different of a world we live in. Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 1, 2019 Super User Posted March 1, 2019 Yeah , not somewhere I will probably ever go. Cant afford it anyway. I seriosly would rather deal with a snake or be around a gator than I would a big spider. I know most of you would think Im crazy, but its true. Quote
Super User Koz Posted March 1, 2019 Author Super User Posted March 1, 2019 Quote I seriously would rather deal with a snake or be around a gator than I would a big spider. Not just a big spider - a spider the size of a dinner plate! I generally don't mind spiders, but that kind of freaks me out. I can just imagine what it's like going on a trip with an outdoor guide in the Amazon or in Australia. Guide pointing at something: "That will kill you. And that. And that. And that one..." 1 1 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted March 1, 2019 Super User Posted March 1, 2019 I've heard that down in the Amazon the also have large wasps that fly at night and if you shine a light....OH....%$#@. Nope...too many reasons to just stay here and enjoy the comforts of home. 2 Quote

My former employer had companies in Brazil and people would take fishing expeditions into the Amazon. One of my coworkers got malaria. It was a bad deal 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted March 1, 2019 Super User Posted March 1, 2019 Oh the stories I could tell. I had a deep fear of spiders so what do I do.......order one out of a magazine along with an iguana for chits and giggles. I was young and stupid. Long story short the Mexican Red Legged Tarantula I received lived 17 years and grew bigger than your hand!! I've got 17 years worth of stories on my "pet". The Iguana got to be 6 feet long and I ended up giving it to a guy who had an entire room in his house devoted to them. They ran free in that room. I had a plexi cage for the iguana (Devo) that was 10 feet long 4 foot deep and 4 foot tall but he roamed the house and went in his cage to do his business. The tarantula (Natasha) had a 55 gallon aquarium for a home. Took her out a lot but she was an escape artist as well. Quote

That looks like a baby possom, or perhaps not a possom at all. At any rate, when I worked at a tropical fish, lizard, and exotic mammal importer/wholesaler, we had bird eating tarantulas. They got to be a foot long. I hated feeding them, as they were very aggressive. They ate live mice. This is how I'd deal with one, if it got loose: 6 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 1, 2019 Super User Posted March 1, 2019 My understanding is that they originated in rain forest of South America and that the common possom's range extended into SA. You're probably right about the different species. That one in the video doesn't look like what we have up here at all, on second look. 1 Quote
