Welcome aboard! I bought my first boat a 14’ flat bottom when I was 19, I loved fishing out of that boat! You’ll have fun, congrats and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum - my question(s) for you are these:

Year, Make and Model?

What are your plans for the layout of the boat?

I will be curious what your plans are to start with and what you end up with.

I'm actually not sure on the year, I do have the title so I will look at that eventually, its actually custom built by a guy in my grandparents' town. it came with a deck in the floor and a casting deck up front, but there is no storage anywhere but a little deck box kinda like the ones you can add to an alumacraft boat, so I am going to try my luck at that eventually. Also: the trailer is in pretty bad shape so my first project is to replace the bunks and sand it down and paint all of it again. the only problem is I don't know if I can go without fishing that long ha!

cleaned out the boat last night, found that the trolling motor that came with the boat doesn't work and neither do the switches for the lights, so will be replacing those soon.

I might have to make a storage box like that one.  I am thinking of extending my deck and you found some ideas that I might use!

sander, sandblaster, or by hand?? Wire wheel may make sense depending on the amount of rust present as well

One of my winter projects is tearing down and rebuilding/painting my trailer. I can't say this is the best way but for what it's worth this is what I've tried. I think the best way would be some kind of bead/media blaster (you might be able to rent one). A guy I used to work with went that route when he sanded/painted his trailer and swore it worked the best. Fast and very effective, but it's messy.

First the stuff that didn't work so well:

Random orbital sander: Did okay but not great. I thought it would save me lots of time compared to sanding by hand. It's okay on flat surfaces but doesn't do well on irregular surfaces, and inside corners are almost impossible to reach.

All purpose sandpaper: clogs

Coarse or medium emory cloth: better but slow

And the two techniques that worked best:

"4 Row x 16 Row Soft Grip Carbon Wire Brush" for $6 at HD. This is a heavy duty bristle brush that strips loose paint and rust and it's what I'm using the most. Gets into tight corners too.

"4 in. Drill Mount Quick-Strip Wire Brush" $16 at HD. Use it with a power drill. Similar to above.

Keep in mind I'm trying to just remove loose rust and paint; not trying for perfection down to bare, rust-free metal. If you want to go that route you might consider a chemical paint stripper.

After the brushes remove the loose stuff, wipe the surface down with mineral spirits on a shop rag to remove the rust dust. You'll need a few passes as that rust dust really wants to stay. If you're working outside consider just spraying it off with a hose then dry thoroughly, and maybe do one pass of mineral spirits (and let it dry thoroughly) before applying primer.

I'm using self etching primer from a rattle can followed by a coat of enamel (rattle can).

I can't stress enough when sanding and priming/painting have good ventilation, or a fan blowing that stuff out the door. The rust dust is nasty stuff and won't do your lungs any favors. Primer/paint stinks to high heaven and can't be good either.

Good luck with the project.

Good tips above^^^

And definitely have good ventilation/fan/air flow; and wear a dust mask.

Also please protect your eyes with some good safety glasses.

If you're planning on taking it down to the bare metal, this pad on a grinder, will knock the paint t off in a hurry. A lot less messy than sand blasting. You still may want to sand blast the joints. On my buddy's trailer we got the joints reasonably clean with the grinder. He used bed liner paint on his trailer and 15 years later it still looks good.

you guys are great. I might start on the trailer tomorrow, going to be crunched on time though because if any of you are like me, you're trying to fish every Saturday you can haha.

I’ve done a ton of welding and second both the wire brushes and flap disc mentioned. Another nice thing about that flap disc is it will sand out pits and such giving you a smooth surface all the way around.

Prior to applying your primer a good wipe down with acetone to clean the metal will remove most everything you dont want on there.
