I have just finished welding the small crack that was on the back transom of my 1948 Arkansas Traveler V hull Aluminum Boat with an aluminum welding product called Alumaweld. I have added waterproof Bondo Glass to the interior corner of the boat where I welded the crack for some extra rigidity. I am looking to paint the outside and the inside of the boat before I install anymore deck framing for the boat...because it will get too heavy. I saw some people applying a epoxy coating or an epoxy sealer to the bottom of there boat that adds a slick and durable bottom coating. Can anyone help me find out what it is and how much it cost and where I can get some?

Once I paint the boat I will finish or continue my decking project... Here are some of the newest additions to my boat deck...

Hey spanky543,

Check out Low_Budget_Hookers rebuild of his Jon.  I think he used Rhino Coat (a spray on bedliner for pickup trucks) on the bottom.  I've put it in my dads truck and I can tell ya that stuff will stand up to anything.  Read his post and that might help you.

Hi,

I'm trying to gather as must info. about paint aluminum as possible over here ...  http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1208786298

Also, here is what LBH said about truck bedliner paint ....

"DO NOT USE BEDLINER!!!

Terrible results, terrible drag coefficient, terrible weight added

I too am waiting to see the results of a few of these Rustoleum jobs.

We are stripped to shiny metal and waiting to see which route, the cost effective Rustoleum with unproven durability (chipping, etc) or the big $$ Interlux (which still eventually chips,....let's remember,...it's paint on a jon boat, they are made to be beat up) we will go with.

ANYONE WITH RUSTOLEUM---Please report in with your results and provide pics if possible.  THANKS!"

Good luck and let us know how things turn out for you.

I know, sadly the truck liner paint did not work out for LBH.  I wanted to do the same thing on my Jon boat.  So, I asked him how was the bottom paint holding up.  I just wanted to share the info. I got.

Spanky543, just put on as many coat as you can at the repair area.  Don't forget to prep between coat.

The following is info. I got that make sense to me.

2 prime coats ( all area )

2 paint coats ( all area )

For the repair area you can add 3 - 4 more coats.  my2cents, if you are going to use rustoleum.

I once, re-finished an old table over 20 yrs ago with 8 coats of poly and it still look like great today.

The floor of my boat had a place repaired but I didnt trust it not to leak so I went over to a local shop that does bed liners and had them to spray the floor area on the inside to seal it hadnt leaked yet. :)
