Has anyone tried magnet fishing for lost lures? I thought about keeping a magnet on the boat to possibly retrieve a lure that broke off on wood or some structure. I have heard the biggest problem is the magnet sticking to something really heavy and the fact that the magnet may screw up electronics, cell phones, and even credit cards if it comes in range of your belongings.

I prefer fishing for fish.   But, I never caught a magnet, so maybe worth a try.

Seriously, though...if I can't get it after a minute or two with my Big Ugly Plug Knocker, I'm leaving it for you guys.  My time on the water is more valuable to me than most any lure.

A buddy of mine tried it for about a week.

Found out it's not quite as simple as he'd anticipated

I think he's now got a couple big magnets laying around.

Biggest problem was that he didn't have a boat, so his biggest obstacle was the device itself and having to throw it from the bank. I don't care who you are, throwing a 5-10lb magnet attached to a rope from the bank is tough and it's not going far. The WR Shot put distance is about 70 feet :D

How exactly would a magnet get a lure unsnagged? I could see if your line broke on the cast or something but if hooks are stuck in wood a magnet isn't going to pull them out.

Going to try it this year because my daughter wants to try it out.

I've got a big magnet that I've retrieved dropped pliers and knives with, never any lures though. Works best around loading docks and boat ramps it seems to me. Got a couple sets of keys from around loading docks, that's a bad day for whoever they belonged to.

The Bell Grove Ponds on the lower  Patapaco are full of metal, but you

might snag on an old bulldozer.

When I was a little kid there was a guy that would walk around the docks with a magnet and bring up all kinds of stuff.  If he saw something fall in he would come over and ask what it was that got dropped and you could tell he was making a mental note of the location.
