James Niggemeyer Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Hey BR, I've been tying leaders on my braid for years and probably the best junction knot that I've found is the FG Knot. Here is a not so quick video on the way that I've learned to tie it. Have a great week! James Niggemeyer 2 Quote
Lance R Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 I bounce back and forth between this knot and the modified Albright knot. I FG at the house and if I have to quickly tie another leader on the water I tie the modified Albright knot. It’s faster to tie but does have a slightly larger profile than the FG. 1 Quote
LionHeart Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 FG knot is king. When I cinch the wraps, I wrap the main line braid around a dowel and tie my leader off to something that won't move. I pull HARD, real hard. If I just wrapped the braid around my hands I'd loose fingers. Check out the rizzuto finish to this knot. Tough to find a decent video, but is the best finishing method I have found for the FG. Good video dude. Nevermind the music, but this is a decent video Quote
Preytorien Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 As LionHeart says I cinch mine very very tight. Sometimes I'll even drip a single drop of superglue on a piece of cardboard and then roll the knot in it a couple times to give it just a bit more hold. I have yet to break off at the joint Quote

My system as well, except I use the blood knot as my "quick lake" knot. 8 minutes ago, Preytorien said: I have yet to break off at the joint Same. At first, when I'd snag up good, I was surprised that the failure always occurred at the terminal knot. Now, that's my expectation. I'll be pretty stunned the day this knot fails before something else in the system. That said, it's tough to tie anywhere else but home (for me). Stability and a controlled environment not always easy to find out fishing. I tie 26 wraps and pull crazy hard FWIW. Quote

It's a fantastic tool! https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiichi_Seiko_Finger_Saver_Knot_Tying_Tool/descpage-DSFSK.html Quote
waymont Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Here's a nice POV video too it's the same way as in the video you posted. I practiced it a while ago over the winter, and I tie it on the water all the time. It takes me about two minutes to tie it now. Zero failures in 4 years! 8lb-40lb braid to 6lb-17lb leaders. Quote

Man, when I say I pull hard, I use both arms to pull on the braid with the leader tied to something. Then I hold while the FG tightens. The braided loops should dig into the leader, slightly deforming the portion that goes through the loops. Here's how I think of it. Whatever force I expect the FG to withstand, I put that force plus a little extra when cinching it down. Otherwise you run the risk of the trimmed leader tag slipping. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted February 25, 2019 Super User Posted February 25, 2019 I found holding the line in my mouth too awkward... especially if you need bi-focals! Instead use your belt loop. Either tie a double knot to your belt loop with a little extra to get the nose of your scissors in there to cut it off when you’re done - or, there’s a YouTube out there with a guy afixing to his belt loop with a Hook-Eze. I've used it a few years so far with no issues. You wrap the line around the ring 3 times and it holds great. Quote
waymont Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 James I tried your version of the Eugene Slip Knot with fluorocarbon. I just tied 10 knots with it all different sizes lines, and it's the most consistent flouro knot I've tried. I always have trouble with consistency when using flouro. Thanks! Quote

It just makes it a bit easier to fix the 2 lines in a stationary position, rather than hold one end in your teeth. I can tie a FG in about 6 mins on the water, which is rarely ever since I usually break at the lure knot and have long enough leader to keep using. Quote

I just bought one of these, waiting on delivery. I want to give one more try to using a 20-30’ leader on one of my spinning combos and figured this was a good time to try the FG as well. Quote
Obi_Wan Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 I've struggled with the FG knot. I have a hard time getting a smooth knot. Seems to ball up on me. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'll have to keep studying these videos and keep practicing it. For now, I use the crazy Alberto knot. Quote
Russ E Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 I will occasionally tie an FG knot at home. but if I need to replace it on the water I always tie an alberto knot. To me it is not worth the hassle. If you tie the Alberto correctly it is small and very strong. I have never lost a fish due to a bad Alberto knot. Quote
