pauldconyers Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 Trying to get my wife to fish more with me this year. (Makes it easier to justify me out fishing and spending money on it!) She can throw my baitcaster fine so I bought her the BP PQ2 they have on sale. Looking for a cheap but solid rod option for her. Probably a 7' option MH with a fast action would be a best for an all around usage option? What would you point me towards? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 24, 2019 Super User Posted February 24, 2019 $100 cheap or $50 cheap? Quote
kenmitch Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 The Ugly Stik GX2's make a good beginners rod. 7ft MH options available. Action? What baits will she be throwing? Quote

LionHeart Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 Get a decent setup that you want. Let her use it. If she loses interest, you aren't stuck with something you can't use. 5 Quote
KDW96 Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 I would buy her a rod that you would use yourself,or are currently using. Quote
SMITTY0045 Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 H20 Express Ethos is a quality rod. Check those out at Academy 1 Quote
Glaucus Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Daiwa Aird X. I got a casting one for my son, but nobody has used it yet because of the weather. People say it runs a little light and that it is not quite a fast but not quite a moderate fast either. Handling it I would have to agree, which actually makes it better in my opinion. Being a tad lighter and a tad slower gives it the ability to do more things well, but still be able to do what a MH/F should be able to do. 2 hours ago, KDW96 said: I would buy her a rod that you would use yourself,or are currently using. Not really necessary imo. People who don't fish a lot and are essentially novices won't be able to utilize the ever so slight sensitivity upgrade in better rods anymore than the average person can tell the difference between a 10 dollar bottle of wine and a 50 dollar bottle of wine. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 25, 2019 Global Moderator Posted February 25, 2019 Going to make a suggestion, buy her something a little nicer. The first rod and reel I bought my wife was a combo. The whole thing was around $70. It wasn't terrible, but the reel seemed to get twist all the time and she'd get frustrated and want to give up because of that. Plus the rod was little big around for her and got uncomfortable for her to hold after a couple hours. Once the wife is done fishing, you're done fishing too buddy. A couple years later I bought her a Quantum Energy PT spinning reel and a St. Croix Avid Pearl that was light and thin. No more tangles, no more problems with it being uncomfortable for her to fish with, now we can stay out longer, imo it was a worthy investment. If you're set on a cheaper rod, there's been several of the Ethos rods on clearance at Academy for under $30 the last month or so. 1 Quote

Buy her a nice combo she will enjoy !! ...Makes any future tackle purchase you may be eyeing for yourself A LOT easier to acquire !! Quote
Derek1 Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Get a nice medium rod you would like. So you can add it to your arsenal when she’s not there. Quote
deadadrift89 Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Berkley Lightning would be fine for cheap MH/fast. But I agree with others about getting something nicer, the lighter the better for her probably and as stated it's great for you also to use when she doesn't go. Quote
fluna Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 New Berkey Lightning Shock Ugly stik Berkley lightning rod (on sale at Bass Pro and Cabelas rest of the week) I bought my wife a Fenwick HMG 2 years ago to match mine-I use it all the time with mine. She never wants to fish. (I knew that would happen) Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 26, 2019 Super User Posted February 26, 2019 You do what you want, but I think that buying a significant other a cheaper fishing rig is just asking for it. If you wouldn't fish with it, why should she? Previous suggestions of $50 or so rods on sale at Academy are spot on. Excellent value for the money. I don't walk into Academy Sports without money in my pocket. Bargains happen often enough there that you just got to get 1 or 2. Last year, I got a couple of jig rods in the $40 range that are every git as good as my $150 (more or less) Falcon Low Rider Eakins Jig Special. My advice is to keep your eye out for "bargains", but don't go cheap. 2 Quote

I just dont get this kind of thought? Maybe people(spouses) who dont fish much, would,if someone would take the time to explain things so the are more educated. Super User NYWayfarer Posted February 26, 2019 Super User Posted February 26, 2019 My suggestion would be the Bass Pro Shops Graphite series rod $39.99. My friend paired his Pro Qualifier 2 with this rod and they match up nicely. Honorable mention for the Kastking Perigee 2 One of the best $50 rods out there. Quote
pauldconyers Posted March 5, 2019 Author Posted March 5, 2019 A lot of guys suggested the Daiwa Aird X and I happened to be at Academy today and checked it out. Also saw a cheaper option while there of the Daiwa Laguna. Anyone know much about that rod? Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted March 6, 2019 Super User Posted March 6, 2019 I like the idea of buying something decent you might get use out of, but if you want to get her a MH/F rod and already have a few MH/F rods then maybe you are better of getting something cheaper. If you want your typical MH/F rod, go with a Berkley Lightning Shock. If you want a rod that will cast most moving baits well, the Ugly Stik GX2 would be the way to go. You could probably even get away with a medium for most moving baits just fine as they have a decent amount of backbone to them. You can also get them in two pieces, so if she doesn't use it you can leave it in your trunk and fish after work. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted March 6, 2019 BassResource.com Administrator Posted March 6, 2019 Don't go cheap. Remember....if she doesn't like it, you get to keep it. 1 Quote
