Med/Mod Spinning Rod for Girlfriend

I'm looking for a spinning rod in a medium action/ moderate tip to get for my lady. This will be for throwing small-ish reaction baits of about 6-11 grams. Namely, squarebills and lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits and underspins with exposed hooks, little spinnerbaits and the occasional popper. 

 

Something in about 6'10" preferably, and "budget friendly", a la Dobyns Colt. Extra points for bright colors. She likes bright colors. 

 

The reel will be spooled with braid (10-12#) and a fluoro leader for everything but topwater. Thanks in advance for your help.

Lightning rod shock or a lady ugly stik are colorful.  BPS crankin stick.

Spinning rods are something I haven't been into for the past few years.  If your girlfriend likes green, Lew's has a 6'6" MF Mach Speed Stick.

 

Okuma has the SST pink Ladies Edition.  Can even get a pink reel for it.  I think the shortest rod offered is 7'.

 

BPS has the Browning Lady Buckmark and the Trion Lady combo.  Not as brightly colored as the SST.

 

In white the Phenix Maxim 6'10" MLF is a bit over your budget unless you can find one on sale or maybe ebay.

 

Too bad she doesn't like black.  I can highly recommend the original Berkley Lightning.  The 6'6" Medium Moderate-Fast would make an excellent option for those lures.  I have a 6' rated 1/8-3/8 oz. that is over 40 years old and has caught more fish than any other rod I own.

Thanks for your input, I'm mostly concerned with finding a decent and affordable small crankbait spinning rod for her. The color isn't all that important. I will take a look at those recommendations. My problem so far is finding a rod more suited to cranking and less towards finesse fishing.

Thanks but she is a chuck-n-wind kind of girl, so I'm looking for something with more of a parabolic bend.

This rod is very popular with tournament jerk bait and small crank baits anglers. Casting will not be the issue, using braid with treble hooks requires proper drag setting to prevent treble hook tear outs near the boat. Spinning rods are usually more parabolic action vs baitcasting rods do to the very fast snap casting technique most anglers use with spinning tackle.

You stated 6'10".

Not to contradict you for the sake of it, but I already own a medium spin rod with a fast action and I do not enjoy throwing treble baits on it. I fish drop shot, ned and weightless only on it because of it's sensitivity. Perhaps it is specific to manufacturer, but I definitely want to try something marked moderate.

Look at rods called trout or walleye, they tend to be slower action upper 1/3rd to rod tip. Loomis PR844S is ideal but 7' and pricy.

I don't know anything about the latest models, but if the new Lightnings are anything like the old model I have, then the 6'6" Medium Moderate-Fast would do very well with treble hook lures.  It is a low cost option, and more expensive rods should have better components.  No way would I steer someone away from such a rod.  I have no experience with the TP-1 but a few on here have given it good marks.

 

There are "Fast" and there are "Fast" actions.  I have a couple crankbait rods with a Fast designation.  No way would I use one in place of a Jig and Worm Fast action rod.

Went with the Abu Garcia 7'  Vertias Medium Moderate Action. Can't wait to use it. About a month away. I looked around and many rods, they were not the right feel to me. Or at least not what I was looking for. Had a guy order me in a SC Walleye version and the Garcia. I'm a big St. Croix fan but walked out with the Garcia. Rod has the feel I'm looking for. How it performs on the water will be the test but I have no doubt about it. I feel that strongly about it. Good luck in your search, everyone has a different feel as to what will work for them.
