bassheel Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 I just can't get comfortable with an extra fast rod. I'm I at a huge disadvantage by not using one? Texas rigs or senkos just feel better on a fast action to me. Opinions please. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 21, 2019 Super User Posted February 21, 2019 I don't think so. I have an Endurance MH-XF that I really like. Otherwise I all my MH rods are Fast or Med-Fast or Moderate. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 21, 2019 Super User Posted February 21, 2019 Not in the least. For me, an XF taper is more important with medium and medium light powers. I want to get into the "power section" of rod quicker on the hookset, to drive the hook home. Baits with big hooks like spinnerbaits come to mind. As you creep up in power to MH and heavier, that fastness isn't as important since the rod is that much stiffer. My heaviest rods for punching are actually moderate-fast. This means even the slightest tug and you're fully against all the rod. So, in short, you totally fine with a fast action. Even better if that's what you prefer. You'll be more confident with gear you like, and not worrying about whether it's fast/extra-fast/slow/whatever. 4 Quote

Myself - I'm more comfortable with a Fast action rod, no matter the power. 2 Quote
WRangler506 Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 Im learning I only like extra fast for a few applications. One is vertical jigging for walleye. Other is super light plastics. Quote
LionHeart Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 Dude don't try to force yourself into an extra fast rod. You are at no disadvantage for not using one. ? 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 22, 2019 Global Moderator Posted February 22, 2019 It's like everything else when talking equipment. Use what feels good and gives you the confidence to use it. That said useing what gives you the best advantage needs to be considered to. I wouldnt use a 8+ gear ratio reel for deep diving cranks, or a ML rod with mono for frogs..extreme examples I know, but you get my point. Personally I like an XF for all bottom contact baits, from weightless to punching. Some on here will tell me that I'm wrong but that's ok. I've been told that before. ? Mike 1 Quote
Elewi Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 I, similar to a few who have replied, also like an extra fast for just a couple of my lighter set ups. Mostly just lighter jigs ML/XF as well as vertical jigging(m/xf) all with lighter wire hooks for a quick easy hook set. These are spinning rods I use for walleye which often bite lightly and spit the lure out quickly. As far as bass fishing I don't think it is as important, but I haven't done nearly as much bass fishing. If you really liked the ned rig i'd recommend something like this as I would imagine it would work great with an extra fast rod. 1 Quote
Glaucus Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 Nope, you're at no disadvantage. I don't mess with M or XF actions. They feel terrible. All MF and F. Quote
Scuba Steve Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 All fast actions for me. I dont have anything else. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 Again, the terms are subjective so different labels may in fact be seen similar. In use it’s a matter of fine tuning and not a dealbreaker either way in most cases. You need to go with your gut and let on the water performance decide. 1 Quote
