I know this is a highly recommended rod. I dont know if this is rated a MH or H, BUT is there anything this rod cant do compared to an Avid Medium, or an Aetos Medium? Im trying to consolidate casting rods, and Im not sure if the Avid X 7 MF is better for certain things, or lighter baits than the 734 would be.

The Avid and Aetos are rated 1/4-5/8, and the 734 Champion is rated 1/4 - 1oz. I don't really fish much for heavy baits though.

Recommend in a split handle or full handle? I really like my 705CB full handle but also the Avid X split grip even though they are very different. Not so much liking the split handle on my St Criox Legend Tournaments, just personal preference.

Dobyns DC734C may be their most popular all around bass rod, can't go wrong unless you prefer a fore grip.

Call Gary Dobyns.

Tom

PS, Paul Meuller just won the Bassmaster Elite event at Lanier using Dobyns rods, ask Gary what rod Paul used!

Is it as light or sensitive as the 7MF Avid? I want to fish more finesse baits and lighter in general most of the time, so Im not sure if the 734 is "better" than the Avid in that way either.

What do u mainly plan on throwing?

It’s a rod that truly can throw just about anything. I’d rate it as a medium heavy even though the rod technically says heavy on it. I mostly use mine for moving baits (spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, buzzbaits, spooks, traps, etc.), but only because I already have some higher end Loomis rods for my bottom contact presentations. Haven’t used an avid, so I can’t compare the sensitivities.

I like full handle rods more than split grips, but mostly due to personal preference.

It's what most would consider "MH". It's not a finesse or light bait rod. It handles 3/16tungsten + bait up to 5/16oz weight + bait well. I use mine as a swim jig rod.

I bought a 734c Sierra during that awesome sale recently and plan on throwing what some have already mentioned, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, small swimbaits. I have some IMX Pros and Avids I plan on still using for bottom contact presentations.

I own the Champion 734C, as well as 2 Avid 7' M-F, and a LTB 7'1" M-F.

The 734C is a step up in power (it's a MH). So it's going to pull the duties that are too heavy to handle what my medium powered rods can handle.

In my opinion, the Dobyns rods feel slightly better balanced than the standard Avid rods. I'm not sure on the weights, but a balanced rod will feel better in the hand and be less fatiguing on a long day on the water. Not saying that the Avid is a tip heavy or unbalanced rod, just saying that the Dobyns is a hair better.

Thanks for the info. Im finding balance is big to me, and didnt think it would be. My Avid X 68MXF balances awesome and I need to use it more, my LTB 610MLXF doesnt balance great and I find myself not fishing it much because of that.

Somehow the 7MF Avid X casting doesnt feel perfectly balanced but pretty darn close. Maybe I need to wait and see if Im overpowering the MF first before I try the 734C.

Id say 1/4 and 3/8 swim jigs? I tried spinnerbaits on the 7MF AvidX and they were ok, but I think Id like those more on a slightly slower action. I have an Aetos 7MF I havent used yet that might be perfect for spinnerbaits as it feels slower than the AvidX .Not sure if thats the norm or not.

Im not experienced enough to go super light on a casting rod, and I dont fish a bunch of heavy cover either. Just trying to use casting setups more, just because they are fun.
