Wacky Worm Smallies

Hello again!

 

What's everyone's preference on Wacky Rig colors for smallmouth? I fish fairly clear water with a slight tannic amber tint to it. Decent sized rivers, lots of current, lots of little eddies, etc. The visibility is really good overall. 

 

Is my best bet to go with matching the forage? Simple and natural? Or go bold. I'm always hearing on the forums that the smallies like bold, bright colors too...

For "smallies", if I'm not throwing green pumpkin, or green pumpkin with some sort of flake in it (orange, copper, or blue flake), or watermelon/red flake, then I'm not throwing a wacky worm for smallies.

Kalin’s makes a Baby Bass with white underbelly...  Green, but with just enough white contrast to get their attention without overpowering.  Best color Senko I’ve used for smallies in any color water... time tested repeatedly with best results I’ve had on the upper Mississippi and Rum Rivers (including the photo in my bio) not far from Wisconsin.

I fish rivers a lot, mostly pretty clear. Everybody has their own preference but for me, the color, especially in rivers, never seems to matter.

I don't throw very big senkos. All colors mentioned are great but Pumpkinseed and black always seem to produce. Some of the shorter Dinger have the short chartreuse tip tail. They produce well.

I usually throw some sort of green pumpkin or watermelon but I will always give a wild cor like bubblegum a shot.sometimes those bright colors crank them up.also last year I was using a bait called a pocket rocket from reaction innovations.it's like a senko but has a skinny middle and bulbed ends, color was called dirty Sanchez kind of a green pumpkin top with chartreuse bottom.they killed it!

Watermelons, green pumpkins, white, and pink. I like to use either a stick worm or a weighted trick worm. A weighted pink or white trick worm has saved the day on a couple post spawn guide trips for me.

I e done well with green pumpkin, real Shad and smoke with black flake. Those are about the only color I throw for and presentation.

Well then, I could just buy the colors that attract ME.

I’m pretty convinced now that I’ve put myself out of some smallies by not using pink. I’ve pretty much turned myself off to the color and Ive ignored it for all these years. As I gotten a lot older I’ve become a lot more optimistic and open minded in many situations. Maybe I should try pink after all these years of chasing smallies. Do largemouth also have an attraction to this color? Do you fish it in all situations like dead sticking, small Texas Rig, shoting/drop shot, wacky? Thanks.

I mainly fish pink with a wacky rig, floating worm, fluke, and Ned rig, but they'll eat it other times. Largemouth have no issues eating a pink bait either.

Junebug green pumpkin or black, depending on rainfall amounts. It’s looking like this year I will have to throw a stick bait on a downrigger to ever hit the bottom! I Texas hook them though, exposed hooks don’t have much use where I fish. Unless you just enjoy throwing money into the water, I have one fishing buddy that likes that. He just breaks off immediately when he gets stuck, doesn’t even want me to trolling motor over for a rescue effort. His motives must be driven by the bait monkey

I go to Wisconsin every year and spend at least a week on different bodies of water.  Since I only throw Yamamoto my favorite colors are:

If I can't get bit on any of those colors on different styles of plastic, then the fish just aren't eating.

Nice dude, thanks for the response. My only experience is drop shoting and split shoting morning dawn. Closest to pink or bubble gum I throw.

the answer is simple next time your on a good senko bite with your regular colors put a pink one on and keep fishing.or do the opposite when they seem only mildly interested in your regular colors put a pink one or some other bright color and try it. ive done that and had them start hammering the bright one. ive also done it and seen no major difference.

If I’m fishing particularly dirty river water after rain or high water, I fish various “white” colored Senkos.  Either:

 

•Berkley Maxscent General in “Blue Pearl Black Hologram” 

 

•YamaSenko in “Blue Pearl Silver Fleck”

 

These don’t sound like “white” colors but they basically are and contrast in dark/muddy waters well... maybe even tanic stain as you mentioned.

Green pumpkin and watermelon basically. I'll try different red or blue flakes. But I like the green and brown for base colors. I fish the st lawrence river a lot and Berkeley has a color called gobey magic that kills on the big river. I use 3" tubes a lot and always have luck with hobie majic
