Picked up a KastKing Megajaws reel in the 7.2:1 gear ratio right after Christmas because I’ve heard nothing but good things about their products, and needless to say, I’m impressed. Paired it with a Bucoo SR Trap Caster... mostly for 1/4oz SK RES’s. Feels great in my hands. I like a lower profile reel. I’m looking to give the Royale Legend (older model) a try just based on the price. Anyone have experience with these two reels? How do they compare in profile and performance?

I have 2 of the older Royal Legend reels. I've got 50 lb braid on them. One is almost a year old, one is over 2 years old. Both have worked great and I've had no problems. The only thing was was tricky at first was getting them tuned right. I have 2 of the 4 breaks turned on and don't be afraid to turn your dial up to near 10 to start. Once you get a better feel, you can switch things up some and have very few problems. Before I did that, I was ready to throw the first in the lake because the reel would spin so fast!

They're not super-expensive, they work well and have held up so far. I'd say they're worth the money. Comparing them to the Black Max and the Lews MG combo reels that I have, I'd put the casting distance above the BM and slight lower than the Lews, only because the KK took a lot more tuning and would backlash a lot easier until tuned. The KK does have a higher gear ratio than both though.

I've been looking now at the MegaJaws also.  Hoping to see how people like it. Does it really cast better/farther and backlash less?

Get a Spartacus instead.  It is the superior sub $40 Kastking reel. It has a a real centrifugal brake unlike the Royal Legend's fake centrifugal brake and is shaped normally unlike mountain of plastic that is the Royal legend.

@BaitFinesse speaks the truth. I have the KK Whitemax (basically a Royale Legend with a low gear ratio) and a Spartacus. There is a world of difference between the two.

The Spartacus is lower profile and it feels lighter. It is the superior reel as far as casting goes. Farther, easier and less backlash.

So, even with the reduced speed, you'd pick the Spartacus over the Royale Legend. And it casts farther and doesn't backlash as easy?

How would you compare either of those with the MegaJaws? I'm asking because I'm interested in checking out the higher speed and something that allegedly casts farther and is "harder" to backlash. I'm also thinking of sticking to braid bit going with 30-40 lb.

Yes I would use the Spartacus over my Whitemax (Royale Legend) it casts farther and is relatively backlash free when properly dialed in. Same with my Assassin and Speed Demon reels.

I have no experience with the Megajaws. Last season I started upgrading all my reels, both spinning and baitcasting to aluminum framed models from Lew’s.

I've got a blue Megajaws I use for jerkbaits. It's been an great reel all winter paired with a Speed Demon Pro jerkbait rod. It fits my hands really well, was easy to setup, and really cast a jerkbait a long ways with ease.

I didn’t have any problems with getting the MegaJaws tuned. I can sling a 1/4oz rattle trap a mile without backlash issues. The only complaint I have is how loud the reel is on the cast lol

Just pretend you have ceramic bearings in the reel and are running them dry.  :D  Personally I don't mind a bit of noise on the cast.  Gives me a better idea how fast the spool is spinning.  Some people don't like a DC reel if it is silent.

Ah, dang it...thanks a lot guys. I might be buying another reel now!

Since I'm shore-bound, there's not many things that I find as irresistible as the next greatest rod/reel that I think I can cast across the lake with.
