Patrickcatalano Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Hello all, I am looking to get a 7 ft heavy rod for frogs and punching at the bass pro spring classic. What would be on everyone’s reccomendation? I’ve been looking at the St Croix Mojo bass or Bass X, or a Shimano SLX. Thanks Pat Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 I dont know how it would be for frogging but the Dobyns Fury 7'3" mag heavy seems to be rated pretty highly for punching. Quote
bassboy107 Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Out of the rods you've listed I would go with the mojo. From experience I would say that the SCIII blank is worth the extra money over the SCII blank. A rod that I would also throw into consideration would be the Abu veritas. Ive had one from every generation without a problem. I recently got a 7/m and so far it has impressed me Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 13, 2019 Super User Posted February 13, 2019 If you are not set on 7' Dobyns Fury FR735C is a very good all around bass rod for your applications @$119, 7'3". Tom Quote
Stephen B Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Go with the 736C for your applications over the 735C if you want to go with Dobyns, but the St Croix Mojo Bass and SLX are also incredible rods too. Decisions, decisions. Goodluck. Quote

If you want heavy, you'd have to jump up to 7'2". Quote

Great budget rod for frogs, heavier pitching/punching and stuff. I had one for a good long while. I’ve since upgraded my arsenal but I still have both my 733c and 735c sitting on the rack just in case I ever need them. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted February 13, 2019 Super User Posted February 13, 2019 With the choices the OP listed, I would go with the Dobyns for balance and less fatigue if flipping all day. St. Croixs are thick, tip heavy meat sticks to me. Last year, I sold my SC Legend Tournament Bass Frog Rod for that reason. I checked out a similar AvidX and it felt the same, heavy and unbalanced. It may surprise some people but I have 2 frog rods I much prefer and are less expensive. One is an ALX out of your stated price range, but the other is only $100 and it was far better/lighter than the St. Croix. It would be longer so you may not want it but it’s the Tatula “XT” 7-4 Heavy. Extremely underrated stick IMO. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 I don't know if it is still made, but a few years ago I picked up (on sale for $80) at BPS a 7' KVD MH full cork handle rod, 4.9oz, rated at 1/4-1.5oz and that thing is a brute for throwing frogs and anything else into nasty stuff. If he really had a hand in designing it he really knew what he was doing. It was sold as a worm rod. Quote
kingmotorboat Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Fitzgerald vursa is hard to beat in that price range. I like it over my champ 735 which absolutely mind boggling Quote
