Super User jimmyjoe Posted February 10, 2019 Super User Posted February 10, 2019 I've never used f-c line. I've also never used flukes b4. This year I want to use flukes on a spinning reel (2500 size) that has braid (10 lb. 832) and use some f-c line for leader, maybe 10 lb. also. This will be used in water no deeper than 12 feet, but with brushpiles and standing brush in the water. How long should my f-c leader be, and does anyone have any recommendations for brand of f-c line to use as a leader? Thnx. jj Quote
Shane Y Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 I started using p-line tactical and love it. 1 1 Quote
CroakHunter Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 Seaguar red label works well as a leader. But mono or copoly will work nearly the same for cheap. 8lb Berkley big game would suit you well. 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted February 10, 2019 Author Super User Posted February 10, 2019 Thanks. How long do you think the leader should be? Guys I fish with have said everything from 2 feet to 10 or 12 feet. I'm aiming to get the right "fall" or "drift" to get the lure vertically on-target, which I won't be able to see. The "school pool test" pretty much convinced me to use fluorocarbon, BUT .... I only had one mono, and that was a .014" line. I suppose I could cadge some snippets of other lines from guys I know. The guy who is telling me to use a roll-on leader (10 to 12 feet) is extremely adamant. I just don't like roll-on leaders if I don't really need them. He also uses the "donkey rig", and I don't want to try that. At least, not yet. I'd like to take this one step at a time. jj Quote
junyer357 Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 Try both shorter and longer leaders and decide which YOU prefer. That is the only correct answer, its really all just personal preference. If you use a rod with smaller eyes, you will prob want a shorter leader than others with traditional eyes. With larger eyes you may like a longer leader. I personally like seaguar blue label leader material for a leader, and start off with around a 4' leader, that gets shorter as break off or retie. Its what i found works for me and how i like to cast. Quote

Super User MickD Posted February 10, 2019 Super User Posted February 10, 2019 Leaders need be no longer than 4-5 feet. I like to use FC designed as a leader material. Much more expensive, but you don't use much, and I believe it is much tougher than FC line used as leader. Its stiffness also helps keep blade baits from tangling on the cast. 1 Quote

Using a longer leader means I have to tie a new leader knot less often. Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted February 11, 2019 Super User Posted February 11, 2019 I used an FC leader for years and still do if I need as much sink rate as possible (finesse mostly i.e. drop-shot, Ned). Otherwise I think it can be a bit brittle, weak. So I’ve started using Yo-Zuri Hybrid... it is much stronger, better knots. It is also a little thicker so if you want the use 10 lb FC, drop down to 8 lb YZH (which has a breaking strength of 11 lbs). Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 11, 2019 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 11, 2019 I never use leaders. It's a hassle, and the knot is just another point-of-failure. Besides, braid is buoyant and FC sinks. For FC line, I like Seaguar InvisX and Tatsu. Seaguar invented FC fishing line, so you can't go wrong! 1 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 11, 2019 Super User Posted February 11, 2019 Salt water it's called a wind on leader. The braid used is hollow or tubular braid and the leaders is inserted into the inside of the hollow braid, using Kevlar thread the braid is wrapped tightly ( like a rod guide ) and super glued to eliminate any knots. Fresh water braid isn't large enough in diameter to be hollow, it's solid so knots are used to join a leader. If knot strength wasn't an issue with FC line Nylon mono would have dissapeared from the fishing market IMO. Seaguar AbriaX is smaller diameter per lb test up to 12 lb line with less memory then either InvisX or Tatsu. Tom 1 Quote
LionHeart Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 When people say braid floats and flouro sinks, it always leaves me scratching my head. Any weighted lure on the end of my line is gonna sink, and consequently so will my fishing line. Are people referring to the bow braid tends to create while fishing bottom contact? If so, okay, I guess I kinda see your point but it's never been appreciable enough for me to prefer flouro. Rate of fall difference? That one will never make sense to me. But then again, there are many things about fishing that I'm still clueless about. Quote

When you take up all the slack out of the line to move the lure, then the line is tight and no longer floating. If the line has a lot of water resistance the line isn't straight to the lure, the is a bow in the line. Tom Quote
