Deep husky jerk

I’ve been using HJ12’s forever with great results. I think it’s an excellent jerkbait. My question is, is the deep down version a good jerkbait? I see tons of walleye people love to troll them. My use would be more as a traditional deep jerkbait, casting it for bass.

 

Anyone have experience using the deep down Husky Jerk as a jerkbait for bass?

I haven't used the deep Husky Jerk, but I do use a Lucky Craft Staysee. I don't really jerk them though, it's more of a pull and pause retrieve. The bill doesn't really allow for the same action as a shallower running bait if you try to twitch it.

It seems the long bills on deep jerks -and possibly the line in the water column- keeps the bait from darting to either side. So, the trigger is a straight acceleration. I don't have any deep Husky's, but I do have some deep Shadow Raps -somewhat flat sided they are- and they will roll/flash a bit with a pop of the rod.

I have used them for years exclusively on smallmouth in Lake Erie. They have always produced big time. Most bites come when they are near motionless after long pulls & sharp jerks. They will run 17-20 feet deep on 10 lb braid with a mono leader with 200 feet of line out when drifting. Obviously when casting you will not get that kind of depth. Glass perch is my favorite color on Erie. If you watch them boatside when jerked you will find the action is very similar to the regular HJ12. They will work for largemouth too. The DHJ 12's are my favorites but the DHJ 10 works well when you want a smaller size with just two trebles instead of 3.

Great. That was exactly what I was curious about. I will only be casting and retrieving as a jerkbait.

I use them all the time, they really produce for me. I don't even use the regular ones, just the deep husky jerks. I have a couple other brands of jerk baits as well but the huskies are my favorite.

The key with these baits....like any Rapala product, is to buy 6 of the same baits at one time.

 

1 will work, and last a while

 

2 will work, and break after a few fish

 

2 will break on the first cast

 

And the last one will spin in circles all the way back to the boat repelling fish for miles.

 

I'm not a gambler, so I buy Lucky Craft, Jackal and Spro.

Funny - pretty much all I use is Rapala...maybe all the one's I've bought over the years fall into the first category as I've never had the problems you outlined.

I myself have never had one issue with any Rapala baits in 35 years. Bad luck over there.

I have some regular Husky jerks that have been mangled by bass and pike, that have had the hooks changed many times still rocking. They are all scratched up but catching fish.

Rapala stuff certainly catches fish, no denying that, just too many durability issues for me which is the same reason I don't buy Megabass. I don't want to whizz in anyone's cereal though, catch fish on what you enjoy catching fish on, that's what it's about.
