Does the Lucky Craft JAPAN Pointer 100 Suspend the same as "non-Japan" Pointer 100? (UPDATE)

Recommended Posts

Specs appear to be the same, the Japan Pointer 100 has silver hooks... but the characteristic I'm concerned with is whether it suspends the same.

There's a sizable price difference between the two, as in, the Japan Pointer 100 is 2/3 the price of the Pointer 100. Does anyone have any experience with this?

All Pointers are made in Japan. Not sure what you mean by non-Japan. Are both jerkbaits that you're pricing made by Lucky Craft?

Don't mean to confuse, hopefully these screenshots will clarify.

The "Japan" version is 38% less. The only two differences I see are 1) the sticker on the packaging and 2) the silver hooks on the Japan version. Listing states they both suspend and that's what I'm looking for. Swapping hooks anyway so no worries there if suspension is the same. Substantial price difference just makes me want to ask if anyone has any experience with these.

Not at all certain I can help...bit I'd be a bit leery of $10 Pointer 100.  Unless, it's used, or a color someone is trying to unload.  Not saying it's not authentic...just be a little cautious

Btw, thanks to @A-Jay, I tend to donate regularly to ebay store, 'I love hardbait'

Or was it @Dwight Hottle?? Anyway, dont blame me....  :)

Looks like your shopping at my favorite store for lucky craft ILOVEHARDBAITS. The baits are different prices but both originate from Japan. They should suspend the same in the same size or series. The silver hooks are often on saltwater series but they all fish the same. The price difference are probably based on over supply deals or something similar but I always found this source to have genuine lucky craft products. Buy with confidence. The colors selections are addictive based on the numerous plano boxes of baits I have accumulated over the years.

Just make sure they are not the S model which stands for sinking. Pointers that are JDM are generally listed as BFreese or something like that. Some come with nickel hooks but not all. JDM colors are great because they have so many colors the US market has never seen. JDM colors and baits have been a secret of mine as fish around here have never seen them which is to my advantage.

The last time I bought a bunch of inexpensive LC Pointers off eBay (believe they were $8-$10 ea.), it turned out that none of them suspended - they were all floaters. Took a lot of weight adjustments to get them to suspend, too. Been long enough that I honestly don’t remember the seller. I’m sure you’re fine in this instance based on the comments above, but the post details just caught my attention.

The one is marked Pointer Sp. Could be Sp (sinking pointer) ? Maybe?

The other one (the white one) also is marked the same way on the bottom, I just couldn't fit it into the screenshot.

I was thinking the "SP" was lucky craft's way of saying "suspending".

I'll find out one way or another when this arrives.

I just had 3 arrive from there today, all 100 SP pointers, all suspending. One of them is the pearl white flake in fact.

SP is the suspending model S is the sinking one. As far as I know only the saltwater ones are made to sink.

Hey

I asked about them a while ago from that ebay seller and got this reply.

"We still have Staysee 90SP ver. 2. This is the new model, Lightning Staysee 90SP. There is no version 2 in Lightning Staysee model."

So it is a different lure, I'm not sure what the difference is but the Staysee 90 that is $9.99 from that seller is called a

Lightning Staysee 90SP

The Lightning Staysee 90 SP is a Lightning pointer body with a Staysee bill on it. The lightning pointer body has a different taper on the tail part of the lure, I never used that version pointer or staysee.

I've purchased a lot LC baits from ILOVEHARDBAITS over the years. He is legit and definitely a "stand up" seller.

Okay well lesson learned. Received in mail today. She doesn't suspend, she slow sinks in 51° water (see clip).

Tried again in even colder water (44°) and it seems to sink a little faster - which confuses me because I thought colder water was denser and thus it would sink slower?? Or does that only apply to how quickly a (suspending) jerkbait would rise?

Guess I'll chalk this up to being the "Japan" version of the pointer. At least it's got a nice nose-down orientation and what should be a FANTASTIC color for my reservoir full of Smallies and Walleyes. Maybe I'll swap for #6 hooks and see if that slows the fall a little.

A smaller hook will slow the fall for sure. A sinking bait like that actually works great in really cold water because fish swim up to it and then it's suddenly right on their nose when you pause it so they have to eat it or move out of the way. I wouldn't be too upset, I think you'll be fine.

Do you have any others to test? Any suspending bait only works in a certain temperature range.

I wonder if it is a salt water version. Salt water being denser maybe it will suspend properly in the salt.

Pleased to report that after swapping the silver stock hooks for two #6 hooks the Pointer now rises (in the same water temp). So I can tinker from this point to get the desired suspension.

Not bad for a $10 Pointer!
