Super User Tennessee Boy Posted February 6, 2019 Super User Posted February 6, 2019 Shimano is a good company. Abu Garcia is a brand managed by Pure Fishing which is owned by Newell Brands. 1 Quote
BoatSquirrel Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 While both make excellent fishing gear, Shimano gets the edge as they make the world’s finest bicycle components. Abu- no bicycle components whatsoever! 1 2 Quote

Abu- no bicycle components whatsoever! This is not true! Abu's parent company Newell Brands owns Bicycle Playing Cards not to mention Elmer's Glue. Shimano has nothing that can compete with Elmer's Glue. 1 4 Quote
onenutinthewater Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Seems kind of unfair that Shishamo is not included in this poll. 2 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted February 6, 2019 Super User Posted February 6, 2019 There is a great video on YouTube about the history of Abu Garcia. I recommend it for anyone interested in the history of fishing in general. 2 Quote
TBAG Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 IMO, there is no comparison. I bet this thread doesn't last long...... 1 Quote

Super User Log Catcher Posted February 6, 2019 Super User Posted February 6, 2019 I quit buying Abu Garcia after I had two of the Revo S reels 3rd generation that were garbage. Both of them had the same problem. Saw many reviews of others that had them and had the same problem. I don't ever plan on buying anything else they make. Quote
Backroad Angler Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 I think this would be more of a argument if the question was, Abu vs Lews or Abu vs Quantum or something Shimano is the king of reels(not too sure about their rods) and thats generally accepted by everyone in the fishing world lol Quote

Gen 4 reels are nice. Gearing toward the ops question it is all a matter of preference. All of the name brands make good high end reels . They all also make entry level, lower quality reels. There is no right answer that suits everyone Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted February 6, 2019 Super User Posted February 6, 2019 I need to correct a post I made earlier. As of January 7th 2019, Pure Fishing is owned by Sycamore Partners. Why this company would want to buy Pure Fishing is a bit of a mystery. Sycamore Partners did invest in a successful women's clothing store called Cold Water Creek. You can fish in creeks....that's the only fishing connection I'm aware of. Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted February 11, 2019 Super User Posted February 11, 2019 I have owned high end reels from Abu, Shimano and Daiwa. They all make great reels. I currently fish Shimano, but it may change by years end. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 11, 2019 Super User Posted February 11, 2019 Shimano hands down. Tom 2 Quote

Super User FishTank Posted February 12, 2019 Super User Posted February 12, 2019 I own both and like both but when you compare their offerings side by side, Shimano is just better when you take all things in to account.....in my opinion. Quote
