Nope. Dobyns rods run on the lighter side and tend to feel more "whippy" than other similarly rated rods. If anything that Dobyns may be a bit underpowered the medium cranks.

I own a medium heavy 705 CB. It is an excellent crankbait rod. 

I won a KastKing speed demon pro medium action crankbait rod in a drawing a month ago.

even though the dobyns is medium heavy and the kastking is medium, they have nearly the same action.

I have used  medium divers, squarebills, and lipless crankbaits on both. 

I would not want to go a lighter action for crankbaits.

Yeah I got one this off season. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but I am surprised how "whippy" it seems to be. Bought it for 1/2 oz lipless (along with square bills and 3 XDs) and I hope it's not over powered by it.

I would write Gary (at his website) and ask about his cranking set up for square bills and lipless cranks ... FC line has less stretch than mono and braid + FC leader has less stretch yet . *Individual preference however a bit of give , parabolic rod  bend , etc. in a square bill and lipless (open water) can be a good thing with treble hooks . For deep diving cranks or lipless cranks ripping out of grass then a stiffer , more heavy duty rod would be in order . I believe you need two cranking rods : One M (6'8" ~ 7') for squarebills and lipless cranks in open water  and one in  MH  action (7' ~ 7'6") for lipless cranks ripping out of grass and deep diving cranks .

It's a toss up. They are real close .

I am leaning more toward the speed demon pro.

I have only used the speed demon pro on 2 trips , so far. Biggest fish I have caught with it was 3 lbs. It seemed to handle that easily.

The speed demon seems to weigh slightly  less. And I like the Winn grips.

They cost nearly the same on amazon.

Can't go wrong with either one.

not at all! They would be PERFECT! I own 2 Fury 705CB's, and plan on using them for shallow to medium cranks.

Ideal rod for medium diving crankbaits like Bandit 200 & 300.

I spoke with Gary and he felt it may overpower the Bandit 200, and possibly the 300. He suggested a 704cb which is in the Champion line. He also let me know the 704CB will be coming in the lower priced lines but maybe not for another year.

Pulled the trigger today on the Dobyn's Fury 705 CB. Thx for the advice this rod is perfect for what I needed. I already had a FR 663 C and have been very impressed. The Fury made me a Dobyn's fan but I had picked up a Berkley Lightning rod for cranking after reading the good reviews on this site. The lightning rod just didn't do it for me, different strokes for different folks. Returned the Berkley for the Dobyn's FR 705 CB and found that his rod has the feel, balance and action that I wanted in my crankin rod. I searched hard and believe this is the best bang for the buck.

congratulations. Out of all the crankbait rods I have tried, over the years. That one is on the top of the list.

I thought you were leaning towards the Speed Demon Pro. I was considering that rod but there are no options to see one before buying in my area.

the dobyns and speed demon pro are my 2 favorite crankbait rods. I use them both.

the dobyns is mainly for divers, the Speed demon pro is mainly squarebills.

 

You can only buy Kastking online.

I already owned a speed demon pro Jerkbait rod, shakyhead rod, and worm/jig rod, so I knew what to expect.

So how did it work out for casting those 1/4 oz or 200 size bandit lures?

I am looking to be getting a 705CB, but maybe from the champion XP line for squarebills to medium diving crankbaits.

The 705cb is too heavy for light crankbaits. It works ok for 3/8oz and up. But the rod will not load on anything lighter.

I use it for kvd 1.5 and heavier. If I am fishing anything lighter, a different rod is used. This is an old thread. If you look at my previous post, I was also using the kast king speed demon pro. After a year, it snapped on a hookset. It is the third kast king rod that failed on me. I no longer use that brand.

I'll go as low as 5/16 on my FR705CB - lighter cranks get tossed on my Medium/Fast...FR703C this coming year (ya-ya, I know it says Medium-Heavy, but it's stats are the same as other manufacturer's Medium...so that's how I treat it.)

I actually primarily throw 1/4 oz traps and 1.5s on the standard 3 power too. Works great.

Hmmm, interesting. I was looking to use 2.0 or smaller, maybe even a 3XD at a maximum. The smallest I was looking at is 5/16. Would the 704cb XP fit that range better than the 705 cb XP?

It's a Fury 705CB and it's graphite. It's my least favorite rod. It's a whip and isn't ideal for me for what I bought it for, 1/4-1/2oz traps and 1.5-2.5 squarebills. I don't really know what I like it for. In open water I sometimes use it to launch traps, but I almost always prefer the standard 3 power. And yes traps is just another way of saying lipless crankbaits, similar to how some people call every stick bait a Senko or every bladed/vibrating jig a Chatterbait.

Too much stick for the bandits, which are essentially big crappie cranks. The 200 is one of my favorite cranks, the 300 haas competition I like better. The USA made 100s are my Wiggle Warts.
