Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 5, 2019 Global Moderator Posted February 5, 2019 @Tim Kelly did a beautiful build on a little boat recently. I did a very function only build on mine. It's not pretty and still a work in progress as funds tightened up significantly, but it gets me to the places I don't want to or can't take my bass boat. 1 Quote

haggard Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Bought a new Tracker 1448 MVX plus trailer for short money. Solid all welded aluminum platform with built in casting deck. Built it up over the winter by stripping everything off the old boat and re-using it on the new Tracker: seating; strong running 1976 15hp 2-stroke Evinrude; cable/drum steering system (built a DIY console). Added new front and rear pedestal seat posts; accessory/grab rails (for cup holders, rod holders, etc.); bimini top; trolling motor. Got 2 months out of her before she died in a crash but in that short time she made some of the best memories and showed a custom build can work. I'm not saying it looks like much, and the photos are kinda crappie ? but it was functional and really enjoyed it. 4 Quote

It would really suck to put that much work into a project and see it ruined after only two months. I only hope someone’s insurance compensated you for all the effort. Quote
haggard Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Yes it was a sad moment. I was literally heading up to the lake to get it on the water that evening. Fortuntately their insurance got it settled and the company was pretty quick and easy to deal with, and the payout was fair. Not low, not high, just fair. What probably helped a lot was having receipts and photos of everything - motors, accessories, etc. I highly recommend saving that stuff. Hope you never need it but when something like this happens I think it really helps you. Quote
pauldconyers Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I soooooo much wish I had the talent and the mental capacity to do something like this for myself. Just not in my wheel house. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 7, 2019 Super User Posted February 7, 2019 Not a super nice one but it works for me and my fishing buddy. 2 Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 This is NOT mine. I found it on Craigslist and was really impressed. I have plans to either build or buy one this summer/fall when I move to Florida. The person who built this one was obviously very talented. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted February 11, 2019 Super User Posted February 11, 2019 I didn't customize my boat myself. Had a custom river boat guy do it. Here is the way it came. And this is the way it came out. Before I added a trolling motor, seats, and depth finders. 3 Quote

Tim Kelly Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 I just about ran aground there in about 3" water when I went exploring. I was amazed how little water it would float in though 6" is plenty! It's a British built hull, to an Australian design I believe. Seastrike Boats http://www.seastrikeboats.co.uk/semi-flat.html Mine is the 12ft model, because it's the largest that will fit in my 16ft garage. Swing away tongues are illegal in the EU for some reason. It fits by about 1/4" if I get the angle exactly right! Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 16, 2019 Super User Posted February 16, 2019 We rarely see Jon boats in SoCal do to winds creating white caps nearly everyday. Up north in the Delta you see everything! I remember during the 90's million dollar world record bass period at lake Castaic when boats from all over the country showed up and several Jon boats were on the lake. There were some amazing modifications one included down riggers, fold down outriggers and fold down pontoons. Several were swamped during the afternoon winds. California had a 1 rod in the water at a time law and some of the out of state Jon boats had rod holders all around the gunnels with over a dozen rods deployed using live crawdads etc. The center console mod was also included in a few Jons. I had no idea how popular Jons were in the southern states. Tom Quote
Johnbt Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 I thought Jon boats were popular everywhere. 3 Quote
Johnbt Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 5 years ago I bought a 1648 Grizzly for ponds, electric only and restricted hp reservoirs. Glued down some red carpet, installed a Maxxum 70, cut an aluminum piece to cover the rear well and got a merc 9.9, and a 12v 35# motor for the transom, etc. Mhmm, bad pic, but you get the idea. 1 Quote
Johnbt Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 I let my friend drive and catch the 10# fish. I need photo editing software so can quit using screen shots. Quote

I'd definitely struggle reversing that rig down the ramp. 2 Quote
