joruzzi Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Hi all, I am relatively new to the forum. I don’t post very often but I have been looking into getting a lowrance unit for my kayak. Just found a great deal for a lowrance hook2 tripleshot 7x. I have been looking for units for a reasonable price online with sidescan. I stumbled on this and all I seem to see is bad reviews regarding the transducer and it not seeing things underwater or not functioning. What are your guys thoughts? Any experience with this unit or the tripleshot series? Thanks for any help Quote
70diesel Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 I was looking at this unit before I came across the Garmin Echomap Plus 73sv. It's touchscreen and you can make your own maps by recording as you boat around. It also has bluetooth which will link up with your phone to see text messages and uses an ActiveCaptain app from your phone for updates and downloads of lake maps from other users. Bass Pro is about to put it on sale on 2/15 for $500 or $600 if you want the 9" screen. To me, it's a no brainer getting the Garmin. The only thing that concerns me is that the unit that will be on sale does not come with the most recent GT52 transducer. Read through my post here Quote
jaimeastin Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Any lowrance with an "X" in the model name is garbage... To me at least. The have slow processors and are just not good. I really like Garmin fish finders. I have 5 different ones. And will be buying two more in a couple weeks. Quote
Jleebesaw Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 I bought a hook 2 5x tripleshot last year. I had to do the factory reset every time I used it. It loses bottom all the time. It often just got the whole screen looking like the sensitivity was way too high. I could see bottom and the depth was showing but the screen was just noise. You can't manually adjust it either, btw. The factory reset would fix it, but it would do it 4 or 5 times a day. I don't know man, I just bought another unit to replace it. Overall i can't say i was happy with the hook. It was my first fish finder and it was billed as having all the features for a lower price. It has the features, but it just plain doesn't work all the time. I even took the boat to a dealer to make sure I had the transducer mounted properly. They said it was right. When it worked, it worked well. But it just didn't work all the time. The thing just seemed finicky. Quote

I do not need mapping on the bow of my boat, gps and plotting is enough. During my testing, those units frustrated me so bad. They were slow and just inconsistent. Lowrance has so much marketing behind them, I don't understand how they let these units out of the door. To make things more confusing, they have the hook2 # and the hook2 #X. During my testing I found units that worked and I wondered why one model worked better than the other. I found that the models with the x, no matter the screen size or transducer features, the model with the "X" was lacking. If you purchase a hook2, make sure it is one without the letter x. Those are decent and elite like. Quote
