4# either Mono or FC... 2# is just a bit too light

It's personal preference, but for what it's worth I usually run 4lb mono for trout fishing.

have you ever tried that SOS line from Walmart? It's cheap. I like it because it can float and when using Powerbait eggs or worms it's beneficial. I use 4 lb and have no issues with trout seeing it. It's also mossy green which is beneficial. I use it in stocked fishing river so they have seen anything and everything.

I really wouldn't go any lower than 4 lbs.  2 lbs is too light for anything other than, maybe, crappie or bream.  The smallest nick or crimp in 2 lb line renders it weaker still.

4# mono. 2 # will give you troubles in the long run. Good quality of 4 lb. test and everything will go ok.
